The Union for Democratic Action ran an anti GM ad by stockholder Ethel duPont urging arbitration and open books. New York Times prints the letter after space constraints hit other papers. Within a day she receives about 500 pledges from fellow GM stockholders.
William J. Leonard faces possible defeat at Democratic County Committee meeting prompting talk he may retire and back a candidate to split anti Leonard forces led by Delbert Glaser. Friends say Glaser backers promise votes to defeat Leonard. Leonard camp counters that Glaser strength is limited. Committee recommendation governs appointment to Leonard’s expiring term as primary fights loom.
Twenty four Greater Cincinnati plants with 12 000 employes face a nation wide strike by the United Steelworkers of America unless a wage increase is granted or a government price raise is allowed. District 25 director Al Whitehouse said ten plants with 2 500 workers will ignore War Labor Board directives by Jan 14 if no settlement occurs. He condemned industry profits and top executives while predicting a union victory and broader support from workers. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

His son runs a Covington grocery where Marrer works part time, illustrating families’ sacrifices. He cites radio remarks urging strong labor action and warns against anti-labor forces delaying wages.
A new City Council including labor representative Rollin H Everett was sworn in on New Year’s Day at City Hall. Willis D Gradison, Republican leader, stated in the press that his party would seize control and show little regard for the four Charterites. The clash followed Albert D Cash’s 16 point city improvement program.
A President Tru man Fact-Finding Committee report on General Motors is expected late this week after a GM walkout. GM and United Automobile Workers reps planned to meet again as CIO leaders in Washington prepare for a broader strike issue. A steel industry fact-finding panel meets Saturday. A 200000 United Packinghouse Workers strike is set for January 16 demanding a 25 cent hourly raise.
