Detroit Firms Set Pattern For Stoppage
Detroit war plants exhibit a common tactic by management refusing union talks to adjust grievances. At Chevrolet Gear, 235 Local UAW CIO members walked out after a three month old grievance over speedup and unilateral changes. The union held a large meeting Aug 3 and defied an order to return to work, with picket lines around five plants. Six men including the local president were fired. the War Labor Board ordered reinstatement and worker return. At Kelsey-Hayes Wheel, 4,000 workers were locked out at 7 AM after a 6 PM 92 hour schedule was imposed. The WLB ordered a return to 7 AM and reinstatement, and referred lost-time compensation to union-management talks.
