At the AFL-CIO Union Label and Service Trades Department 53rd Convention Joseph Lewis urges progress through promotion and a union label contract focus. He argues to mobilize mass purchasing power of 15 million members to defend workers rights, promote union products, and halt anti labor measures.
Since 1967, 60,000 workers in 26 unions across non ferrous metals have been on strike for reasonable wages, shorter hours, and decent conditions. The Allied Kingsport Press Unions gain support from AFL CIO delegates calling for boycotts of Kingsport Press products as nine months of negotiations at Boren Clay in North Carolina fail to yield a contract.
Patrick E. Gorman of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters explains to a Senate Public Welfare Subcommittee that state inspection must meet federal standards or the federal government will step in. He says the goal is protecting consumers from contaminated meat and poultry, and notes worker health benefits from clean plants. He adds the union urged locals to strike if needed to stop contaminated production.
