Memphis Strikers Win AFSCME Union Recognition and Raises
Memphis city workers won recognition for Local 1733 AFSCME as their bargaining agent after April 16 talks with the City Council. The pact includes dues checkoff, a 10 cent raise May 1 and 5 cent raise September 1, a four-step grievance process, and promotion by seniority. The agreement ends reprisals, resettles 1300 workers, and expires June 30, 1969.

One Man One Vote Applies to Local Government, Court Rules
The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 3 that local governments such as counties and cities must have districts with substantially equal populations to avoid unequal representation. The Midland County Texas case held that a unit with general powers across a region cannot be apportioned by population unequalities, reinforcing the one man one vote standard at local levels. A safety message from the Department of Highway Safety follows.
