Canada Ortaw reports that in September 167 the government plans a considerable expenditure to relieve Red River settlers. Fort Garry will be constructed and a road opened to Red River. Workers will receive provisions as part wages. An agent heads to Chicago to secure supplies and subscriptions pour in from cities across the province for relief efforts.
In Rarelan on September 16 a Republican base meeting and barbe cue drew about 5,000 Black attendees and around 100 white delegates. Speakers included Governor Holden and Governor Hawley of Connecticut, the latter the only outsider. James W. Holden urged Blacks to vote with a prophetic warning of Southern Democratic doom as a torch-light procession unfolded amid enthusiastic crowds.
Atlanta September 16 the Senate passed the House bill granting State aid to the Georgia Air Line Railroad. Higby Republican voted yes but questioned Assembly legality after mass expulsions. Public rights and state credit figure in the dispute as two senators were sworn in to fill vacancies caused by expulsions. The House pursues a bill barring negroes from jury service.
In Montgomery on September 16 the Legislature held an extra session. Speaker McCraw resigned as Chancellor and G F Har of Mobile was elected Speaker. General Howard visited and was invited to address the House at 8 tonight. Governor Smith sent a brief message. Trains on the railroad between Mo le and Montory are repaired and running uninterrupted.
A report from Fort Wallace Kansas on September 16 describes twenty five Indians stealing twenty mules near Pound City. Citizens pursued but did not recapture. A band of about one hundred Indians was seen near Pound later stealing twelve hundred head from a herd of two thousand five hundred animals en route to California. Troops chase, and a Texas herd is linked to weed families. Spotted Tail with about one thousand Sioux moves toward Fort Randall reservation while scouts form at Golden City and Colorado City.
A Teal boiler built at the Dis Works was tested in the presence of Benj Craw, a United States Treasury Species Agent, and a Pepnay venia railway delegation. A pressure of 780 pounds per square inch was reached before rivet failure and seam opens halted the test. The steel showed no breakage even with seven hundred pounds further pressure.
Cutcaco September 16 saw a championship billiard match between Jose of Montres and John McDevitt of Chicago. McDevitt won in the ninth inning with an extraordinary run of 1 462 to close the game as the score stood 1 502 for McDevitt and Dion. A large crowd attended with orderly enthusiasm and no disorder reported.
