The Gentleman Beggar and the Lawyer's Tale
In Dicken's Household Words a lawyer encounters a rehabilitated gentleman beggar named Fits-Roy, once titled, who rose to wealth and social rank before ruin. The attorney Balavaice recalls Pin Roy's fall from grace, detailing his costly marriage, debt, and ultimate hardship as he seeks aid from a magistrate and an unscrupulous plan to claim a portion of the beggar's supposed fortune.
