Capital in idle term as Cabinet takes brief vacations

Magnificent Republican Demonstration at Akron

A Cincinnati Times dispatch from Akron on October 4 reports a massive Republican demonstration in Summit County. An estimated 20,000 people gather at Grace Park for speeches by Schars and Wooster, with three miles of procession already passing through the city. Factories, bands, horsemen, and banners fill the scene as supporters arrive by teams and country conveyances.

Workhouse sentences heard by Police Court judge

Judge Lindemand passed sentences this morning for a range of minor offenses. John Brehm received 60 days and a $50 fine plus costs for abusing family and resisting officers. Other defendants included Mary Shields for drunkenness 30 days Catherine Heffron disorderly conduct 10 days James O Rourke petit larceny two months George W Clarke loitering 10 days John Zink disorderly conduct 20 days Frans Dekach 2 days Dennis Jaskey drunkenness six months A J Millet loitering 80 days and John Carpenter abusing family 30 days and a fine of 35 cents.

City Sues for Wharfage From Forbus over Rent

The city filed a petition to recover 3000 dollars from M. Forbus for rent of wharf property between Cochnower's west side and Millcreek. Leased March 18, 1872 to Graham & Co at 2000 dollars yearly. next day Grabara & Co transferred rights to Forbas, who has held the wharf since and paid part, but refuses to pay the balance.

Third Annual Convention of Fire Department Engineers Opens

New York October 4. The Third Annual Convention of Engineers of the Fire Departments of the United States opened in Firemen's Hall at noon. Chief H. Clay Sexton of St. Louis presided and the body discussed aims and matters of interest to departments. Chief P. H. Raymond read the call. Eli P. Bates of New York was elected permanent chairman but declined to serve. A five member committee to nominate officers was named: Benner Chicago Cronin Washington Green Boston Gibson Rochester Hendricks New Haven. An invitation from the old volunteer department to dinner in Blecker Buildings tomorrow night was accepted. Delegates sent regrets and substitutions for absent members.

War vessel Tornado sails for Spain from Havana port

In Havana on October 4 the warship Tornado formerly Octavia departed for Spain with cargo and crew aboard. The vessel, described as a murderer in dispatches, set course after loading at the port yesterday.

Walnut Hills Man Reports Horse Theft To Police

Henry Senker complains to the Superintendent of Police that a horse, 16 hands high, was robbed last night from Walnut Hills. He offers a liberal reward for its return. Our Boys by Daly’s Fifth Avenue Company will be produced at the Grand Opera house as announced by Mr Daly’s counsel.
