Belknap Held in Police Court Today on Bail

Major Richards, Chief of Police, arrested General Belknap ex Secretary of War this noon and brought him to the Pit Court. Belknap, flanked by counsel Senator Carpenter, waived examination and offered collateral to secure bail while the court adjourns, details of the bond and proceeding to be announced.

Sleeping Car Wreck on Kanakee Route Near Lafayette

Special Dispatch reports a palace sleeper Castalia on the Kanekee Route was derailed west of Lafayette. Passengers injured include Harry Crawford of Chicago D W Pervail Edward Brows Morris Mosler and conductor Lewis and sleeping car conductor Davis all sustaining injuries though not all serious.

At the Comique Theatre tonight Mabdei Hal an English ballet girl was shot in the left temple in a refreshment room by Edger M Moore. Both wounded beyond hope of quick recovery Moore remains in critical condition and the motive appears to be unrequited love. A separate incident reports a fatal quarrel near City Point Missouri as Bill Burnet and Sandford Johnson were shot following a dispute with John son. In business news the St Louis Kansas City and Northern Railroad lists new directors B W Lewis Jr Joseph Bory S H Bretton George D Hall and others reporting January February earnings 12090 ahead of last year. The line notes major track work with steel and iron rail upgrades and bridges rebuilt along the main line with new tracks and depot facilities added.

Norman Wierd Denies Washington Fraud Claim

Norman Wierd, a cow in this city, denies a telegraphed Washington claim accusing him of fraud in ordnance experiments. He states about $160,000 from Government for the experiments was properly audited vouchers. Total expended around $225,000, the rest from his own pocket, for which he has no intention of claiming from the Government. If alerted, he plans to return promptly rather than delay further.
