W G Morris of Cincinnati won best hogshead cutting leaf, with Thos Rhodes Co of St Louis second. Samuel Edwards won first for best hogshead black wrappers, with a second prize to him as well. Louis Newton & Co of St Louis won best ten hogsheads shipping leaf for Miller Cochrane Morgan of Keytesville Missouri. Mrs James Haselwood of McCracken County won the best hogshead manufacturing leaf raised by a lady. Premium tobacco sold post awards with top prices noted for various categories.
In Atlanta on July 8 a memorial was presented in the State Senate concerning Mr Winn and others holding seats, amid a debate over the Omaibus bill. Chandler sought to strike “and others,” a move opposed by a Republican. Bradley denounced challenges to members’ eligibility by race, invoking rights and recounting past freedoms.
