From New York, February 17. At a meeting of loyal Georgians at the Cooper Institute last night, speeches were given by several residents of Georgia. Resolutions denounce the possibility of Georgia returning to the Union. A World’s Wash Special notes House Commerce Committee has finished examining cotton permits. They will next examine the officers who issued them. The Sun’s special says the President discussed a new Treasury Secretary with a member of the Ways and Means Committee. The Tribune’s army of the Potomac reports the rail line being extended to the left position held by the Sth Corps with a large force of men and wagon roads under construction.
A Richmond Sentinel article argues for destroying the present Confederate currency and reducing debt to gold bids while urging intercession ceased. Other papers discuss treasury gold, pay cuts for rebel officials, and Confederate prospects as Sherman advances, with Beauregard and Gordon targets near Branchville and Columbia.
The Tribune notes Confederate forces along the James River and predicts a new push by the Rebel fleet. An order for execution of the Rebel command appears to have been issued, with authorities preparing for further actions.
