The Grand Duke and his party spent four hours in Mammoth Cave yesterday and departed for Memphis at 12:15 A M. The report notes related travel updates, including the steamer Congress near Fortress Monroe and various wartime and political mentions.
Special Dispatch to the Times reports sixty Chinamen in the city dead over six months, rising foreign demand for American securities is low, and railway mortgage losses abroad total around fifty million dollars. A detective report details the arrest of a ring led by Swarmstadt and Comey for passing forged and raised checks totaling thousands of dollars. Arrests occurred near Postoffice Avenue with evidence including letters to W K B Thomas Co. from Philadelphia. Swarmstadt and Comey were moved under a governor’s requisition to Kentucky. Early this morning a fire broke out at the Newcastle Agricultural Works leased by the Win itor in Newcastle, Pennsylvania. The press building and contents were destroyed with losses estimated between 70,000 and 50,000 dollars, insured for 25,000. Origin unknown but suspected incendiary. flames were seen before firemen arrived.
At the Custom-House investigation Edward C. Johnson testified he offered Leet sixty thousand dollars yearly for the business. The witness described storage pricing and the general order monopoly. Leet and king allegedly profited by charging merchants per load. Charles and N E Markson were arrested for smuggling jewelry from the steamer Calabria, valued at ten thousand dollars.
