Henry Porter and William Williams, both colored, were arrested day before yesterday and tried this morning by United States Commissioner Hooper who noted an irregularity in their license. Porter was fined or continued for two weeks for Williams to settle the matter, Porter described as very dark and weighing over 200 pounds.
The recount of votes in the contested election for County Commissioner shows Hopper ahead of Birnbaum. Documents list Hopper as winner in the West End Division No 3, with Birnbaum's tally omitted. Also noted is a separate notice of a social event and installation of officers by Sons of Temperance at Sixth and John streets on New Year’s night.
