Special Correspondence Cincinnati Times from Army of Cumberland reports a harsh winter campaign with the Dove expedition near Hurricane Bridge and a Stone River reminiscence. It recounts captured rebels, losses, and a brutal murder of Federal pickets, plus reflections on treason, patriotism, and wartime morale.
Special correspondence recalls a 1863 episode near Vicksburg with the 47th Ohio building a bridge over Steele's Bayou under Gen Ewing and Gen Sherman orders. Infantry crossed to aid gunboats, a tree collision damaged a steamship, and Union forces pressed the Rebels at Hill’s Station before cotton was cast into the bayou during a hurried withdrawal.
About 150 discharged soldiers from the Potomac region arrive in Washington and are cared for by Major from Ohio. They receive food, lodging, pension examinations, and government-rate travel tickets, with a staff of clerks processing pensions and finances.

The fleet withdrew after reconnaissance as losses totaled two and seven, with Sanford departing and ironclads moving to blow up the Keokuk.
The Rising Dawn schooner, prize, returned to port after a voyage from New York via Nassau and New Orleans, with some rivets started in her turret. The Keokuk was sunk in Charleston Harbor, one man saved, and Captain Atwell said to have been at Hilton Head. The Dolphin and a schooner were involved in the chase near Key West.
