The Rev. Alexander Martin of Virginia, D D, inaugurated as President after the board’s move to dismiss two faculty members. He accepts immediately, the term starting tomorrow at Greencastle. Clergy and laity meeting raised $5,000 of $40,000, with $400-$500 more pledged. finances thus deemed a partial failure.
A Georgetown fire, caused when a clerk loaded a pistol near a can of gunpowder, destroyed several shops and caused about $50,000 in losses. Eisenschmidt and Herring, injured but salvaged, face a community of sympathy as insurers and owners assess damage across adjacent buildings.
On the second day of the Northern Indiana Association fair in Fr Wayne Ixp September 14 an estimated 4500 visitors toured the grounds. Exhibits generally improved over last year except the Fine Art Hall which lagged. Isaac Wetz and followers attempted to seize the grand stand using a lease error naming saloons under the stand, causing an upset and their ejection by officials. A lawsuit is anticipated.
Farmers report crops safe from frost with warm weather. Antioch College at Yellow Springs opens tomorrow and expects a normal student body. Xenia College attendance up, with many local women in Cincinnati Pittsburg Oxford and beyond. Presbyterian Church closed for two months. Rev Ralston remains in city after resignation. Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home managers meet in monthly session tomorrow.
Special Dispatch reports from St. Louis that the Feneman Company of Kansas City indicted for selling crooked whisky and keeping false books withdrew not guilty pleas and pled guilty. Sentence withheld. Officials say negotiations may withdraw other not guilty pleas and substitute guilty pleas.
Columbus report records the sudden death of Rev. William Slaughter of Westerville a Trustee of Otterbein University who died while serving as a missionary in Philadelphia. The same dispatch notes local burglary waves with losses including N. D. Perry’s gold watch and Tom Marshall’s $36, and mentions the Buckeye Base Ball Club reorganizing with four new players.
Cuttihorney Sept 14. Republicans arranged a grand mass meeting at Frankfort on Saturday next. Hon John Sherman and Hon W W Curry of Indiana will be speakers. A free train will run from this city for those wishing to attend. The County Fair opened today with superior showings in all departments except horticultural. Attendance on opening day was light.
Legaxoy Sept 14 Jas D McCain a highly respected farmer living near town was found dead in bed this morning likely from heart trouble. James S Totten Esq assumed duties of County Treasurer today.
Tere Havre Inc reports the Vigo County Fair beginning today with strong shows in the Fine Art Department and livestock. First premiums are to be awarded tomorrow.
New York dispatch notes Carl Schurz arriving from Europe to campaign for the Republican Party in Ohio. He warns that a Democratic repudiation platform there would disgrace the nation, while Ohio Republicans meet enthusiastically. The report also mentions Senator Morton at Portsmouth and improving business with full hotels.
An immense gathering in Portsmouth Ohio on September 14 drew over 10,000 to hear Indiana Senator Morton. A two mile east-side procession formed by wagons as crowds filled Market Street and the Barnum World Fair pavilion hosted 8,000 listeners. Morton praised the Republican cause amid applause and handshake lines.
Gov Allen and Sam Cary appeared for speeches at Mansfield with the venue moved from Opera House to the park then from the park to the Wiler House parlor. Allen attacked wartime taxes and warned of a third term while Cary scored partisan divides, defended the Geghan law, and blamed Republicans for the panic. The Ashland Democratic nominating convention named Dr. Wm. Businell for State Senator.
Gen Woodford and Hon A M Burns spoke at the Opera House to a large audience in Springfield O this evening about National honesty. Burns delivered a powerful argument while Woodford received frequent cheering. A colored Hayes gathering at Fair Grounds featured Wm Lawrence Col Warneck Urbana and J Sella Martin New Orleans with strong addresses and engaging exercises.
At Eaton a joint meeting of the Central Committees of Preble and Montgomery counties nominated Hon. G. H. Eidson for State Senator. The mood was somber among Democrats who felt their candidate had little chance.
In Georgetown yesterday the People's Convention produced an excellent mixed party ticket headed by local Republicans and Democrats. The event drew strong excitement, with voters and supporters forecasting a heated county race unseen for years.

In McConnaraville on September 14 Senator Sherman addressed about 1,000 people for two hours. Attorney General Little followed as part of an all day meeting in Roberts Grove with numerous speakers. Republicans are jubilant over the turnout and success of the event.
On September 14 Busyavs Ohio Hons. M. L. Bateman of Cincinnati and J. L. Price of Van Wert spoke to a crowded courthouse. They discussed finance and school questions, and the meeting was reported as very satisfactory.
The Kennebec Journal reports returns from 264 towns with Rhepublican Connor leading for Governor 45 035 to 41541 and a majority of 3494. Dingley’s margin last year was 9433, with 229 towns pending. Democrats win 13 to 15 Senators and expect 12 Democrats to 6 Republicans in Representatives.
An 80 year old Little Rock resident Dr P P Burton died yesterday. President Grant left Long Branch for Washington. A fast newspaper train reported on time. Senator Carl Schurz arrived in New York from Hamburg. The Direct Cable Company to charge twenty five cents a word for cross Atlantic messages. Burton Stevenson of Elm Flats Fairfield County died by suicide via strychnine. Virginia Press Association entertained in New York by city officials. In Little Rock a baseball game saw an arm broken and a hand split. Ex Senator Pugh delivered an ovation in New York. Wm S Crosthwaite, son of Mendota owner, was rescued after a wreck. Clarence A Ward of St Louis killed his wife and himself over jealousy. The Pimlico schooner from Ireland to Chicago went missing on Lake Michigan. Osage Valley Southern Kansas Rail Road sold in St Louis for $50000 to John H Tracy. Dr R H Lindeman in St Louis assessing a potential branch mint. Chicago Northwestern repaired. passenger trains running Chicago-Omaha next day. J A Lapham, noted geologist, died in Wisconsin. Red Cloud Agency commissioners meet with Indians about Black Hills sale but accomplished little. White League massacre anniversary observed in New Orleans with service and graveside rites. Thomas W Nichols, bank teller, believed to have fled to New York. over $50000 missing. Secretary Belknap to Des Moines for Army reunion. Elizabethtown Lexington Big Sandy track sold for $5 to Gov Leslie Coombs after damages judgment.
At Mystic Park Boston on Sept 14 a harness stallion race for a $10,000 purse drew 5,000 spectators. Six starters included Thomas Jefferson Parkis Abdallah Ned Wallace Commonwealth and Defiance with Allen as Wm H. Allen distanced. The winning times were 2 27 and 2 26 as the favorites Jefferson and Parkis Abdallah led the field.
Strinchato scored as Milfords defeated Nationals 14 to 10 amid a darkened arena. Chicago and Hartford games are noted with low clarity, but the series shows Milfords topping Nationals by four runs in a nine game slate.
Telegrams from Constantinople and London detail Herzegovinian insurrection submissions near Stolatz, Montenegro delaying war with the Porte, and a proposed conference among signatories of the 1876 treaty. London dispatches say Don Carlos reviewed Dorregaray’s troops at Elizondo and urged his followers to march toward Madrid.
London reports 612 men and 15 percent women indicted in Russia with 265 arrested for socialist activity. The Procureur-General warns Socialism spreads, citing many upper class figures among the accused and predicting revolution if wartime opportunity arises. Paris notes 24 million francs raised for the Inundation Relief Committee chaired by Madame MacMahon. Also city totals 88 deaths and 120 damaged houses from floods in St Cherin and surrounding department.
Reports from Tallahatchie County and Warren County indicate excitement is fading and no further trouble is expected. Ex Senator Pease and Lieut Guthrie report local peace officers and willing citizens ready to assist the sheriff to prevent any disturbances.
In Rutger's Square at about 10:30 am Ada's patent aerial ladder snapped during practice. Chief of Battalion Wm. H. Nash and two men died outright with several others injured as the ladder toppled from about a hundred feet.
Kansas City on September 14 hosted the second day of the Industrial Exposition with about 20,000 attendees. Jefferson Davis arrived at 11 o'clock and spoke to the crowd at noon, praised by applause. Senator Cockrell and ex-Senator David Atchison followed with brief remarks. no politics were touched.
Revenue officials in San Francisco inspect wholesale liquor houses and find packages misdeclared as smaller volumes from the Pacific Distillery. Officers report destroyed accounts, while officials from Washington announce the dismissal of gaugers J N Driscoll and F M Montell for complicity. Investigations continue to identify all involved.
Key West reports the steamer Zodiac, after departing Nassau on the 6th, caught fire the next morning and burned with its cargo. All passengers and crew survived after taking to boats existing on a sunlit voyage, one day from rescue. Cause suspected as spontaneous combustion of old oakum.
A Toronto telegram reports a Grand Trunk Railroad wreck in the morning near New York. Several train workers were killed as the entire train derailed and cars caught fire. A large number of cattle buried in the wreckage were roasted alive, with rescue efforts overwhelmed by the blaze.
Ava Montgomery Sept 14 The Committee on Finances and Taxation reported to the Constitutional Convention that the state’s finances are in a dire condition. They claim full payment of the state debt is impossible and that debt-adjustment commissioners will cut the debt through strict economy to allow interest payments at an early day.
In San Francisco on September 14 the Nineteenth District Court issued a decree replacing the old trustees with Floyd Atherton Barnard Murphy John H Lick and John Nitingale as new trustees. Jefferson Davis Jr son of the ex Confederate president accompanies his father on a Western tour. He is twenty one, has spent much of his life in Europe and will return from Colorado to settle in the cottons business in Amphis.
