Ohio soldiers from Vicksburg were admitted to Jefferson Barracks Hospital near this city. Most are convalescing and will soon be sent home. Names include Wm Francisco, Michael Hugo, Jacob Beichert, Lowery, George Niniser, Socrates Walz, Joseph Miller, Otto Bascharin, Kalteuf, Richardson, Simm, Eme, Chas Brevalry, Fred Martin, Samuel Grubbs and others from 58th, 68th, 7th Ohio Battery, and 4th Cavalry. May 26.
Entitled statement from the Black Republican of New Orleans resisting any move to reimprison freedpeople. The text condemns plans to reduce the freedmen to bondage again and casts such measures as a betrayal of emancipation and wartime gains.
In Stevenson Alabama on May 25, 8.R. Prarce reflects after eight months in the country on reconstruction and the negro question. He argues slaves are free, negroes can work if treated fairly, and a unified policy is needed. He envisions a gradual cohesion of institutions and labor, with loyalty to the government as the core of future prosperity.
A May 26 Louisville letter laments narrow city politics delaying a welcome to council members while praising Louisville as soon to be free and hospitable. It notes General Palmer’s stance on military trials for soldiers in Kentucky and criticizes Sherman’s treatment of Stanton, praising Stanton’s wartime service.
Gen. Dix returns to Mrs. John Tyler a banner taken from her Staten Island home. It is not a rebel flag but a decorative banner with no national or party affiliation, made for her children before the Civil War era.
In Frankfort on May 23 the Union Executive Committee nominated Captain William ie of Madison County as the party’s candidate for State Treasurer and called Kentuckians to ratify the constitutional amendment abolishing slavery. They argue the war ended slavery and Kentucky must adopt the amendment, dismissing compensation concerns and defending the measure as a constitutional necessity backed by Union loyalty.
A May 19 letter from Kentucky Branch managers appeals ministers and congregations to fund relief for war victims. It outlines aid to the sick and wounded, a refugee home in Louisville, and clothing and feeding of displaced women and children, urging broad statewide support and citing Matthew 34.
A compiled roll lists Ohio regiments prisoners at Jacksonville Florida with deaths and graves. Names include Wil liam Wickham, Elijah Baker, A Fairbanks, J Homer, Rospaotes E, J Laughsessay, and many others from 45th 100th 2d Cavalry and additional units, with dates from 1864 and graves numbered across numerous entries. The record preserves service members and their final resting places in a solemn roster.
At Headquarters 907 in Camp Hanxegn Tennessee regimental officers held a meeting to elect a delegate to the State Convention in Columbus on June 21. Lieut William J Webb won the delegate seat on first ballot with a majority of votes. Sergt S Parsons named as Alternate. A six member committee was formed to draft resolutions urging Gov. Brough renomination.
A large May gathering in Chattanooga with officers from the 14th 16th 18th 42d and 44th U S C I presenting. They submitted a memorial to the Tennessee Legislature urging personal liberty equal access to courts education and civil rights for colored soldiers and citizens, praising General Howard and calling for end to caste laws.
Correspondence from the Cincinnati Gazpite reports the Vernon oil well fire finally quenched after a water tank and flame diverting defenses. The hole was abandoned as tools remained and a new well began nearby. The incident stoked regional friction between Vernon and North Vernon over oil claims and credit.
A Bowling Green correspondent reports severe winter and cold rains have ruined wheat outlooks in Franklin County and similarly in Rush Union and Fayette counties. Oats and flax look promising, corn planting is slow, and fruit prospects are strong with a generally favorable showing.
The Louisville Journal reports Alexander H. Stephens has long harmed the Confederate cause. It recounts rumors from Richmond last December of rebel leaders plotting to assassinate Jefferson Davis if he dies to prevent Stephens from becoming president.
Col R D Massey now with the 100th Regiment of colored troops, Day of Fasting and Prayer to be held citywide per President Brough proclamations. Reference to a 1863 county fund for militia uniforms, seeking original subscription books to refund the loan, with efforts ongoing to locate books and subscribers through the late secretary of the treasury.
Lines mourn the untimely fate of a youth and reflect on faith and mercy. Arrival of Sheridan's command brings veterans and reports on licens es, hospital statistics, real estate sales, and a wine growers meeting with frost damage discussed.
Covington announces M. Clifford appointed City Sealer and Ganger. Public notices say Covington will observe a day of fasting and prayer Thursday. A soldier named John M. Swaney, reportedly partially deranged, left Main Street. A hospital wake mentions Chief Pesce and Esquire Egleston.
Telegraph dispatches detail a devastating Mobile explosion at Marshall's warehouse. About three hundred people killed and thousands buried amid eight demolished blocks and eight thousand bales of cotton burned. Loss estimated in the several millions with the cause still uncertain. relief rendered by Gen Granger.
The Herald reports Texas foraging under Colonel Barrett with 300 men overrunning Palmetto Rancho camp then advancing toward Brazos. They faced about 1,000 rebels and retreated. Barrett had no KIA and five wounded. seventy men went missing but many later returned. Rebel losses unknown and Brownsville crowds feared an advance.
New testimony links Geo. N. Sanders and Jacob Thompson to the Booth assassination conspiracy and to distributing tainted clothing in loyal states. Stanton plans to resign after trials and may be sent as Minister to Berlin. Davis indictment reportedly pursued with government approval. Troops to Texas to guard the border and restore order despite Kirby Smith’s surrender.
North Carolina reports a large Union meeting on May 20 at Goldsboro praising colored troops and noting destitute rations despite a policy change. Savannah sees a trade revival as restrictions ease, with open Custom House, upriver steamers, and growing stores. Also reports arrest of Mexican emigrants over a privateering plot and Panama pirates case. River news from Petersburg notes seven feet on the river and calm weather.
A $30,000,000 case was argued before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania over a law permitting counties to borrow to aid enlistments. The challengers claimed the act violated the U.S. Constitution and state provisions. They argued the measure was a money decree, not a legislative act, and conflicted with constitutional safeguards.

Columbus May 12 1865 Trustees of the Ohio State Asylum Idiots invite the General Assembly to approve funds and land purchase for a site and buildings. A prior act provided fifty thousand dollars for land and improvements with options to sell or donate, and the trustees seek bids or opposed offers before June 1 guiding site selection for health access and living costs. Trustees request donations or sale of land suitable for the institution in the state.
