Senator Bruce announced in the Senate he would move to abolish the Freedmens Bank Commission and transfer its management to the Comptroller of the Currency. He aims to bring the bill to a vote at the first opportunity, with a companion measure to reimburse depositors for losses to follow. The Ways and Means Committee plans a May 27 adjournment to avoid debate on disputed points. Other obituaries include John W Higgins Hillsboro lawyer and Deacon Samuel Shipman aged seventy six. A drunken mayor coerces a council.
Splitting Cook County, two conventions meet in Chicago as anti Grant and Grant factions nominate full sets of delegates for Springfield. A county committee chair is ousted amid uproar. rival groups plan to contest seats at the state convention and possibly bolt to the national gathering.
Republican councilors left the chamber breaking quorum after two Democratic members Penn and Kistler allegedly violated pledges to support appointees in Fire Police cemeteries and schools. A drunken Democratic mayor allegedly ordered a mob to seize Republican members and was condemned by many. Impeachment resolution reportedly to be introduced at the next council meeting amid citywide excitement.
The Rev Mr Talmage preached at the Tabernacle in Brooklyn on revival efforts aided by telegraph and other modern improvements. He expressed hope to save 10 000 souls through these means and urged continued use of new technologies in spreading faith.
In Muwauker and Jacksonville May 10 reports show Democratic delegates leaning against Seymour while instructing Sixth District delegates to back any anti-Tilden choice. Judge Mallory and James G. Jenkins top the selections though Mallory hesitates, citing poetic justice for Tilden. The First District renominated H Bisbee Jr. for Congress as party lines form toward Chicago.

May 10. The Wilson County Democratic Convention at Lebanon was broken up by riotous opposition from the low credit faction invading the courthouse and forcibly capturing the gathering. State credit Democrats withdrew, organized in another room, and adopted resolutions reaffirming the 1876 78 platform opposing repudiation and urging an equitable debt adjustment. A committee was named to choose delegates to the State Convention.
The Union Veterans of Trifilois invite all veterans of the Civil War who support the Republican Presidential ticket to assemble for a mass convention in the city on June 1 at 10 a.m. at Haverly's Theater.
Bradford Pa May 10. Four 25,000 barrel tanks burn as lines down and telegraph out. Tide Water pump station and tanks along the valley ignite. Firefighters trench around tanks while high winds threaten Rexford and nearby forests. Rain later eases danger and forest fires recede though property losses mount.
Judge B K Elliott sits in Indianapolis Circuit Court as the county sues former treasurer Harrison P Hunt for failing to report and account for about $10 000. Hunt contends he did not receive more than accounted for and that a prior settlement with the Board of Commissioners estops any recovery. Thompson and Marsh represent the county and Colgrove and Cheney defend.
New York reports 4657 immigrants at Castle Garden with 3139 arriving earlier today in three ships. The arrivals reflect ongoing migration as officials process new migrants and record their numbers at the port facility.
