The Daily Gazette offers general news from all quarters with full market reports for foreign and domestic commerce. Subscriptions are 15 cents weekly for City subscribers, 7 dollars yearly for mail, 850 for six months, or 2 dollars for three months, all paid in advance. Agents receive 10 cents per copy weekly, selling to subscribers 15 cents.
Published on a smaller sheet with the same matter but excluding main commercial features. No mail copies. Carriers and Agents receive ten copies at 6 cents per copy weekly. subscribers are charged 10 cents. Agents serving subscribers weekly must apply. Clubs of ten or more may receive for a set period at 4 dollars per year, in advance. City subscribers pay 10 cents weekly to carriers.
The Lords debate the Queen proclamation on blockade and contraband, urging clear meaning of lawful blockade under Paris terms. A second extraction condemns Beverly Tucker’s Partizan Leader as treasonous history, arguing Virginia officials plotted rebellion against the United States and predicting Virginia purge of treason at Richmond.
From Marietta correspondence of the Cincinnati Gazette, June 3, reports Col. Barnett's First Regiment Cleveland Light Artillery heading to Virginia, with detachments and a friendly reception by local ladies. Describes civic support, a Brenan's Hall lecture by Dr. J Haynes on war and patriotism, and a sweeping defense of true patriotism and the flag.
Baltimore correspondent reports crowds in the streets awaiting extras, mentions Geo W Calvert nominated by the Union party for Maryland sixth district, Jefferson Davis arrival in Richmond, government mail seized at Harper's Ferry by Secession troops, and forecast of likely heavy fighting in Virginia next week. Our St Louis Correspondence reports Brig. Gen. Lyon named Commander of the Military Department of the West and Colonel F P Blair Jr as Commandant at St Louis Arsenal. The John H Dickey carried about forty passengers including James George, a St Louis secessionist, captured at Camp Jackson. Rumors say Beau regard and Ben McCulloch are moving to Missouri, as Union supporters plead for aid. funeral notices for Capt Geo H Derby of the Local Corps of Engineers close the dispatch.
Correspondence from Parkersburg June 1 describes a continuous ovation for the Indiana Sixth Regiment as it moves through Ohio. Soldiers report Union sentiment, praise from towns and prominent encouragement from Buckeye ladies with flowers and gifts. They plan to return via Charleston Montgomery New Orleans and Memphis and promise to honor Ohio kindness. They move by railroad to Grafton and join a larger force concentrating on Richmond.
A fragmented wartime dispatch praises General Mellerlais and the Nail as a triumphant message to Western Virginia. It notes a long campaign, FAW troops, and two rail bridges built under Civil War era banners, reflecting victory and jubilation in the face of conflict.
Correspondent reports a secret secessionist company of 75 to 80 led by R A Cumming aiming to arm and resist troop passage. Cumming is shot in the neck by Flanigan, dying instantly. A Union Guard led by Captain Ayres forms and Pennsylvanian volunteers encamp nearby, with intent to move toward Harper's Ferry. Depredations by Virginia rebels continue despite sheriff orders.
