Damaged Gazette advertisements $140 per square each insertion. All notices per line 10 cents. No ads under 2 lines. Front matter mentions ads for wants sales rentals lost found marriages deaths society meetings and church notices.
Special correspondence from Wassineros notes Cabinet wrangles and the looming vacancy at the Treasury as Fessenden departs, with McCulloch, Usher, Forney, Harlan, Arnold, and others named. Greeley quotes joke about Nye as a Treasury pick amid broader political maneuvering. Major Gen. Wood earns deserved promotion while New York presses to move the state capital from Albany to a central location near Delmonico’s.
Columnus February 23 reports a grand Neil House banquet by the Hamilton County delegation praised as the week's event. Gov. Brough spoke on national memories with Lieut. Gov. Anderson and Octavius Waters delivering strong toasts. Colleagues Connell Stevenson Howells Babcock Martin Gunckel Harrison Glover Nixon Stanton Green Fielding Wilcox responded well. The evening closed with songs as the assembly dispersed. The telegraph bill in the Senate, fees for recorders, soldiers cemetery bill, stock and hay scales inspection, and several other measures were noted.
An Alabama Huntsville letter notes army encampment comfort, pay delays, and spring warmth as troops enjoy relative leisure. It reports visits to General Stanley, paymaster hopes, and the Christian Commission’s support, with railway communications improving after the Tennessee Alabama Railroad.
From Fort Fisher, N C on February 13 a correspondent notes the immense fortifications along the Cape Fear river and its mouth, praising engineering work by officers. He describes Fort Caswell, casemates, ditches, traverses, and armament, including an Armstrong gun from Newcastle upon Tyne. The piece laments blockade running, praises Union gains, and closes with a bleak vision of rebellion’s fate as cold weather grips the coast.
In a February dispatch from Washington the writer notes Beauregard’s retreat and Lee’s position between Union armies. They warn that McClellan is not commanding and that evacuation of Richmond may be needed to force a decisive battle, as reinforcements and interior lines threaten a critical clash near Washington.
A government briefing lists Ohio convicts paroled and arriving in Annapolis Maryland on February 17, with names across regiments including Tecqueen Schenk Davis Parkee Warnick Hill Cogins Slade Kniss Raney Dark Painter Mantate Brewer Leas Nunerd Wells Ryan Barrison Genne Bance Hawkine Bymee and others acknowledged to Governor Brough via James C Wetmore.
A dense OCR list compiles hundreds of names with ranks and units such as 11uth Regiment 2dment and 12th Cavalry, including J H Gattermen Carino, Lewis, Fenton, Pandey, Jameson, Nowland, Wells, Wood, Blake, Porter, Kellogg, Shackelford, Harper, Crick, Martin, Rhodes, Murphy, and many others. The fragmentary text preserves officer and enlisted names, companies, and regimental affiliations, reflecting a wartime roster page.

Marmaduke paroled to visit Missouri as RK T Semmes remains in custody. Dental convention in city with Dr Chesebrough elected President. Front dispatch appeals home aid against scurvy. Masonic Library project in Cincinnati aims for rare works. about fifteen hundred dollars expected. Counterfeit 2 cent currency warns public. Middletown pastor Mor ton honored with silverware and a gold headed cane. Sanitary Commission reports weekly receipts and shipments for the Cincinnati branch.
Telegraph dispatches from New York report two deserters from Mahone’s division arriving at the Confederate lines. Major Brown, Provost Marshal, has been processing deserters overnight. Sherman's South Carolina victories dampen rebel morale and prompt desertions as Lee strengthens rear guards. Reports indicate removal of serge guns near Petersburg and a large rebel force around Petersburg. One brigade of Hoke’s division is sent south. total rebel strength around Petersburg estimated at 30,000.
Gov Vance of North Carolina issues a war proclamation urging continued struggle and prayer as disasters are blamed on soldiers absent without leave. The Richmond Whig notes Beauregard may clash with Sherman if Sherman moves toward Richmond. Gen Roddy has driven Federal forces back inside Decatur’s fortifications in Northern Alabama. The Herald’s Turk Island report covers Spain and the Dominican war and continued hopes for Dominican independence amid troop withdrawals and civilian hardships.
From Shenandoah Valley a Herald correspondent reports a detachment of Sheridan's cavalry surprised by Moseby's guerrillas near Ashby's Gap on Sunday. The Union force, about ninety men, reportedly evaded capture and returned to their regiment, reducing the perceived severity of the engagement.
Wagpington Feb 24 The House passed a Senate joint resolution directing inquiry into the present condition of the Indians and their treatment by civil and military authorities. An amendment provides for a Commission of Pension to be appointed by the President instead of a select Congressional committee.
Advertises a sale of varied jewelry and watches with thousands of pieces listed and certificates issued for one dollar each. Claims random envelopes conceal contents and promise fair chance, with agents sought nationwide.
Public notices seek sealed proposals for Army Department stores including winter wheat, cap paper, blank books, inkstands, and headquarter books. Also invites bids for purchase of dead horses and mules, merchantable oats, and oats delivery to Ohio river transports with bonds and attestations required. Bids due February 28 and March 1, 1865, at 12 o'clock.
An old style medical note describes catarrh symptoms and suggests a remedy by SEELYO & Co. It warns of nasal discharge throat irritation and potential lung spread. The advertisement promises a free pamphlet detailing symptoms and offers to mail information to Army or other recipients and to provide sample addresses.
Dr Seelye's remedy claims to ease bronchial and throat complaints including bronchitis croup and sore throat. The tonic syrup promises safe speedy relief and strength to the lungs with a one dollar bottle price from Dr D H Seelye & Co.
