Washington reports that the selection for Boston Collectorship will not be awarded to Mr. Butler’s protege. A public House hearing witnessed a disgraceful personal altercation centering on the appointment process and integrity concerns.
Washington reports the Boston collectorship dispute favoring a Butler defeat as seven Massachusetts delegates urge President Cleveland to reappoint Russell. Senate rejected Careron's currency bill amendment 26 to 32, with inflation supporters split. The Ways and Means panel heard direct sales proposals while internal revenue debates and a House fracas over public documents franking privilege drew sharp clashes between Beck and Crossland. Sanborn protests and a Treasury contract dispute looms, while charity and veterans events mingle with business failures and escape of two youths amid a citywidePolice note.
The week ending the 14th shows New York receipts totaling 2 458 107 with Philadelphia 246 405 Baltimore 154 672 Boston 365 878. The President nominated B H MceEckron Register for Kansas land district and Theodore C Phillips Postmaster at Bay City Michigan.
Dayton February 19. Frederick Tobias, in a drunken spree, killed himself at his Phillipsburg home leaving a wife and several children. Two suspects, Fred Brown alias Fred Gardner and companions from Ravenna, Ohio, are being pursued by authorities after his arrest here and a chase to Ravenna. Police and a legislative committee visited the Southern Asylum as part of ongoing investigations into thefts and assignments. several named individuals were mentioned in the pursuit.
John Blackburn and Gilman Corder waived examination for burglary before Justice Case and were committed to jail to await grand jury action. They face several years in the Penitentiary. Jessie and Gilman Corder were tried for assault and battery and fined ten dollars plus costs and ten days in the County Jail.
Multiple fire incidents reported on February 19. A residence near St Louis suffered $40,000 in damage, insured for $1,000. In Pittsburg loss listed as $1,000. An explosion at the Consolidated Gas Company retort house in Pittsburghs Twenty-eighth Street caused a fire but limited spread. A six year old boy in New Albany Indiana died after a garret fire started by matches. In Donohue, Pennsylvania, a railcar shop and several cars burned at Donohue station, with about $50,000 in losses.
