In St Louis the District Attorney planned rebuttal evidence after a lengthy trial closing. Judge Porter urged acquittal on a law basis citing constitutional right to jury trial while Col Broadhead argued for jury verdict based on circumstantial evidence. In St Louis on February 18, counsel for William McKee secured an affidavit from a Pike County resident. In Vinton County near Richland Furnace Margaret Nixon was convicted of murder in the second degree for killing her infant. The jury reached its verdict at 2 p m after the case was given to them at 9 p m the previous night. Prosecution was led by C L White with Capt W J Rannels and U S Claypool and defense by Irvine Dungan.
The Senate and House benevolent committees arrived in Toxeco at 10 PM and were greeted by Mayor Guido Marx at the depot before a bountiful supper at the Boody House. Speaker Grosvenor and Senator Ransom joined the delegation, with Toledo district senators in tow. A morning visit to Lucas County Insane Asylum and other Toledo institutions precedes departure for Cleveland at 5 PM.

The House Pacific Railroads panel advances reporting requirements for railroads including land grants, mileage, earnings, and rates, with penalties for noncompliance. COWAN WILL RETIRE as Assistant Secretary of the Interior with no clear successor named.
A Feb 15 New Orleans dispatch reports the Conservative caucus showing opposition to Gov Kellogg impeachment, while a Feb 18 Memphis memo notes the House and Davis Investigating Committee escorting to the Senate bar and formal impeachment of the Lieutenant Governor with a case set for tomorrow.
Locansport Indiana, February 18. The man Lockwood, victim of a vicious attack at New Ross Montgomery County last Sunday night, died yesterday from his wounds. No arrests have been made. Local sentiment appears to view the act as either mockery or retribution for his alleged adulteries.
In New York on February 18 Moody and Sankey held meetings at the Hippodrome attended by about 12,000. Rev Dr Hall opened with prayer. Mr Moody spoke on the theme I am the Light of the world and said Christ is a burden bearer for all who lean on the Savior.
In the inquiry rooms those under conviction were counseled by Moody and Sankey after brief remarks by Mr Moody. The gathering proceeded to a closing benediction as the service concluded.

News from Lonpoy and Deal reports the Strath Clyde collision with the Franconia. Of 29 aboard the Strath Clyde plus crew and passengers, 16 are reported lost with three more died at Dover and later estimates show 23 passengers and 47 crew total. An inquest opened at Deal accuses the Franconia of failing to aid survivors.
The London Times front page article questions Spain's Cuba note, calling its stance illogical and defensive. It argues insurgents are portrayed as insignificant, Cuba’s suffering is downplayed, and Spain’s generosity is misrepresented. It suggests Spain could pursue a measured path to eventual freedom.

A blaze at Rice Point near Duluth damaged one wing of the Lake Superior and Northern Pacific Railroads round-house and severely damaged four locomotives. Loss totaled about 15000 dollars.
