The act would take effect on July 1 and abolish the Bureau’s civil machinery. The Secretary of War would appoint an army officer not below colonel to oversee the office with army officers acting as superintendents and agents. Indians would be maintained under army oversight with an enumeration to be conducted. The committee report was unanimous. The secretary seeks 500000 dollars to cover pay deficiencies from June 15 to 30, 1875, hoping to pass before the deficiency bill. About 2200 original measures have been introduced in the House this session.
Information from Feb 15 reports a man named Lockman, caught in an adulterous act, was assaulted by four men who dragged him from bed and shot or mutilated him. He is not expected to recover. Trains are again running through on Crawfordsville and Southwestern lines.
Voters polled in a february election as a party ticket faced limited turnout. Officials reported meager returns and cautioned that full results could not be released until the following day.
