Arrival of Banks Expedition to Port Royal With Thames Accident
The steamship Ericsson with Col. D. C. Littlejohns 110th New York Volunteers arrived at Port Royal dragging the propeller Thames carrying 400 men of the 114th New York. The Thames suffered a machinery fault and was refitted after a gale. A board of survey deemed the Thames utterly unseaworthy with frail pine sides and unsafe hull. Colonel Smiths detachment remained at Port Royal while Ericsson proceeded to join the rest of the expedition.

Obscure Dred Scott rulings questioned by high court opinion
The piece argues that Dred Scott opinions hold no authority beyond addressing circuit court jurisdiction. It asserts the author’s view that a free person of color born in the United States is a citizen and, if otherwise qualified, may be a vessel master in coastal trade. It praises the opinion as analytically strong and a valuable archival document.

Angels Will Rock Thee From The Echoless Shore
A fragmentary verse recalls a parent calling a child from the echoless shore in life and afterlife symbolism. The speaker trusts angels will rock the child to sleep and calls for a return from the silent boundary between worlds.
