The city marked Thanksgiving with many offices and banks closed and churches drawing smaller crowds than usual. Central Presbyterian preached on divine oversight and the defense of liberty, arguing modern war is not defensible and defending the nation as a Christian people.

The report describes ships and batteries in action, the flag signals at Fort Sumter and Wagner, and the bombardment by ironclads and shore guns near Morris Island with vivid but restrained Civil War style.
A fragmentary passage references Mr P Allen and chief boatswain Mr Wmester competing with each other, noting experiences during a voyage. The text praises the gunner and boatswain for their courteous service and pleasant stay.
From Memphis Bulletin August first. We spoke with several gentlemen from the original seven seceding states who served in the Confederate military. They acknowledge misjudgments about the North and the South, recognize futility of Confederate victories, and now favor restoration of the Union as the best path to relief. Local informants report a broad shift toward acceptable peace terms and disillusionment with secession.
