Samuel J. Tilden’s acceptance letter frames reform as essential to restore purity and function in government. Hendricks urges fiscal retrenchment, civil-service overhaul, and a return to sound currency with gradual resumption of specie payments, arguing the St. Louis platform demands wholesale reforms.
