In Chicago a Gary Indiana newsboy Willie Rugh volunteers skin from his leg to save Miss Ethel Smith after a motorcycle accident. Doctors graft 150 square inches, then amputate the leg. Both recover. the girl may leave hospital sooner.
In Philadelphia, John Palasis must send his 13 year old wife to school for another year or face jail. A truant officer reported the girl and Palasis was arrested for violating the compulsory attendance act. The magistrate fined the father 14 dollars and costs and warned that noncompliance to age 15 would bring further arrest and fines.
Special Cable reports Lord Rupert Iveagh accompanying Ida Rubinstein on a hunting trip in British East Africa. The article says he plans to take action against his wife Lady Gwendolyn Onslow upon returning to London. The Onslow and Iveagh families are prestigious and wealthy.
London society is unsettled as rumors spread about Lord Rupert and his rumored escape involving his wife. The report notes speculation from London on resumed public appearances and possible implications for social standings.

Cleveland, Sept. 29. Eight thousand dollars a year is the profit the sheriff of Cuyahoga County makes in feeding prisoners. The executive board of the Municipal association reports an investigation finds actual cost at 17 cents per prisoner per day, with 50 cents allowed by law. The report urges law changes and suggests reducing the sheriff’s salary from 6 000 to 5 000 dollars.
Charles J. Schneider filed to change his name to Joseph C. Metzger as he traces his origins to Nagy Jecsa in Austria Hungary after a two decade search. A cablegram was sent to his suspected parents and he plans to cross the ocean to meet them. He recalls life with gypsy family in a German village near a frontier and a thirteen year wander through Austria Hungary Germany and Servia before coming to America.
Beverly Mass September reports say President Taft will not let the senate committee’s Mexico findings drive policy. He told visitors intervention is not unlikely but not probable and he has no plan to call Congress for action. Conditions in Mexico are improving, yet intervention remains a remote possibility.
Toronto businessman William McCaffrey, his wife Laura, mother Mary, and children Grace and Howard McCaffrey, were drowned on the Pigeon river while muscalonge fishing. A fourteen-pound muscalonge hooked by McCaffrey is linked to the incident. Coroner rules canoe overturn while rescuers recovered the bodies. New date: Sept. 29.
William H. Peterhans, a convict burglar known for his song While Thou Art Mine, is moved from a tuberculosis prison camp near West Rutland to Warden Bridges' Charlestown institution. Captain George C. Erskine notes the outdoor life aided his recovery, but music at the prison aids his health.
In Aiken South Carolina Sept 29 a mob tried to lynch Hugh Long mayor of Wagener and state representative elect after he shot Pickens Gunter bank president in a politically charged case. The sheriff and deputies rescued Long from his office as the building was surrounded and state troops were briefly considered. Long had returned to Wagener despite warnings and was moved to jail.
In Valparaiso thousands flee amid predictions of strong earthquakes around this date. The Chilean government orders warships kept in port for emergencies while anxiety grows in Santiago.
Republicans are urged to register by Oct 3 for the November election. Polls run 8 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm in all precincts. Former registrations do not count.
A crowd of thousands witnessed Buck Powell of Wilmore plummet about 200 feet from the High Bridge north bank in Lexington. He died after landing on jagged rocks near the river as he and companions picnicked and climbed along the cliff edge.
