George Mueller, weakened by illness, recovers to renew his lone quest to unmask the killer of his sister Lulu in Cumminsville. He insists he knows the suspect but cannot prove it and pledges endless effort to bring the murderer to justice with his mother’s belief backing his pursuit. The family holds that the slayer remains at large.
New York September 29 A National City Bank official commented on securities worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and large certified checks being entrusted to messenger boys amid the Pearl & Co disappearance of over 300000. He noted the loan clerk faced no censure and banks have been lending about 50 million weekly with youths taking funds via certified checks. Three uniformed messenger boys arrived at the loan window and drew out loans totaling 400000 while presenting securities.
Herbert Barber was found not guilty in the Cambridge bank wreck case after a trial moved from Guernsey County. The Common Pleas Court proceeding, presided by Judge E M Kennedy, ended with a verdict at 7 p m and cheers from Barber’s supporters.
New York September 29 The legislative committee probing the insurance investigations reports progress as Alfred W Maine of Equitable Life testifies that Equitable Mutual Life and New York Life formed a pooled effort to influence state legislatures. He details Hamilton Short and Thummel handling western states and records $65 596 paid to Hamilton over eight years for legal services. The witness notes shared expenses for special counsel and says campaign contributions were not observed.
Ohio Attorney General rules Capitol Mutual Life Insurance must have full capital paid in before charter. Capitol Mutual seeks $300000 capital with $100000 paid in and rest to be subscribed. Union Central Life in Cincinnati could be affected as Pattison leads both firms amid dispute over capitalization rules.
Tokyo reports that Japan accepted Portsmouth peace to avoid financial breakdown. The war drained resources, crops failed due to rains and cold, rice yields may fall 15 to 20 percent below average, and six more months of war would have worsened hardship for the poor reliant on rice.

A major blaze in Bennettsville South Carolina destroyed the business block west of the public square except Planters Bank Building. Loss estimated at about $100,000. The fire consumed the Post Office wood structure and several stores including W P Breedon harness and buggy shop Stalls and the Excelsior Hardware Company and Wetherly dry goods.
