In Harrison Mississippi on September 28 two drug crazed mulatto boys started a street shooting spree that left three white men and three black people dead along with a negress. The Jones brothers were lynched after soldiers arrived to restore order as more were wounded including Sheriff Hammett and Conductor Appleby.
At Rheims the day featured cross country races for six biplanes and seven monoplanes over an eighteen mile circuit. Five monoplanes finished the ninety mile course with Rost first in 1 07 18, Provost second, Patmin third. Biplanes were Caudrons and slower overall.
Sept 28. Otto Gumpert, a Wheeling & Lake Erie switchman, shot his stepfather Clark Martille. The act occurred with the mother present who was ill. The killer surrendered to police and aided after the shooting, then asked for a physician. Family troubles were cited as a cause.
The Pope has shown increasing weakness with no audience for three days and bed rest. Rome reports his health as unsatisfactory though not caused by a specific illness. Physicians warn against receptions until strength returns, making his attendance at the December Jubilee uncertain.
Springfield O Sept 28 An exhausted jury remains hopelessly split after about thirty hours of deliberation in the murder trial of Dr Arthur B Smith charged with killing his first wife Florence Cavileer Smith The court sent the jurors to deliberate again for the night as a prior trial ended with a disagreement Defense lawyers said they would seek a new trial and bail if another dispute arises.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Panama on September 28 reports Private John T. Stanton of Company A Tenth Infantry drowned in Culebra Out, marking the first drowning in the completed canal section.
Wilbur Foerste, seventeen, a Cleveland department store errand boy, stole 1400 dollars from his employer and fled by train to New York. He admitted the theft after detectives confronted him on a New York Central line, planning to sail to Munich for Oxford University.
Reports say Constitutionalist army routed with 1,600 Federal pursuers near Sabinas Barroteran and Piedras Negras. Mining properties and town of Barroteran destroyed to deny Federals. Refugees exceed 3,000 as Federals advance and prisoners executed in Barroteran.
Coroner Feinberg calls thirty eight prominent New Yorkers to form a jury panel for the inquest into Anna Aumuller's death, linked to Hans Schmidt's confession. Names include J P Morgan, Rockefeller Jr, Vanderbilt, Astor, Whitney, Gould, Belmont, and others as a precedent for corpus delicti questions. Schmidt stays in bed as his lawyers guide the proceedings. Dentist Earnest Murett offers to testify and denies seeking leniency.
Secretary of State Bryan left Washington for Purcellville Virginia to deliver a religious address at the town auditorium. Dodgers announced his 2 pm talks with free admission and he returned to Washington immediately after the lecture.
Paris dispatch says General Felix Diaz praises Senor Federico Gamboa as a liberal candidate for Mexico's presidency. Huerta backing Gamboa noted in Veracruz reports, with Diaz expected to arrive October aboard the Corcovada and two or more tickets possible.
On a country road near Winchester Kentucky a fatal shooting left Ellis Brandinburg dead and Ben White badly wounded with a bullet through the abdomen. Hollin and White claimed they fired in defense after Brandinburg opened fire as they approached from the rear. Sheriff Brock arrested Hollin and jailed him as investigations continue.
Homer Cleveland Wiggins, who escaped from Eastern Penitentiary, fired thirty bullets from a lodging house window at Fourth and Shipley streets. Police surrounded the building as Officer Sewell Scott lay critically wounded. At 1:30 am police burst in and found Wiggins dead by his own hand, having killed himself about half an hour earlier.
Mexico City on September 28 reports Colonel David de la Fuente former Minister of Communications and Public Works under General Huerta has been put forward as a presidential candidate by the Liberal Republican party.
