Fragmentary text reports Smith in accord with Hoover on a Democratic plank. A note mentions May poured in country. reference to Mississippi flood control funding described as barely touching the surface, according to the governor addressing Minnesotans.
Gov. Smith assails the Harding Coolidge era for lacking leadership and failing to craft an effective relief plan for farm problems. He defends waterway routes, supports expert guidance between routes, and rejects claims of immigration favoritism, urging adherence to current laws while criticizing Republican inertia and hidden reactionary control. He cites past leaders Wilson and Roosevelt as contrast. He also notes Hoovers acceptance parallels with party platform on agriculture and family hardships.
Three white men aged 27 to 30 robbed the Covington Telephone Exchange at 2 PM, escaping with about 1500. Miss Lillian Wachs, 25, cashier, was forced to face the wall as two robbers emptied cash drawers. Police pursued suspects in Newport and Newport area.
Evans Hiland age 18 of Montpelier was electrocuted and Herbert Elser of Bryan burned when a tape measure touched a 6600 volt line as they measured a guy wire for Lake Shore Power Company northwest of Defiance Ohio. The incident occurred September 27.
Stephen Ketling reports his car was fired at by Lorain liquor squad members who allegedly wounded Betty Heywood near the Thirty-first Street Bridge. Three officers were bound over to the grand jury on charges of upshooting with intent to wound after arrests at their homes.
Detectives Ellenrieder and McShane arrested a man in a failed scam aimed at patternmaker Harry Dietz of 4116 Thirty-first Street. Dietz reported drawing $1500 in Liberty bonds and being approached by a fake detective who tried to lead him to the post office and city hall before the ruse collapsed. The suspect, Edward McNeil of Cleveland, 48, was held for further investigation. Dietz warned other officials and cooperated with real police.
Washington reports indicate unusually good general business with construction contracts reaching a record 192 million dollars in a week. The outlook remains strong as check payments totaled about 6.5 billion and factory payrolls rose in August with automobile output at high levels.
Knox County officers investigated the killing of 63 year old bachelor farmer Thomas McMahon found dead in his bed. He had been shot and his head crushed. A stolen corduroy vest reportedly holding 2500 to 5000 dollars and a Ford automobile with two clubs were found near the house, suggesting robbery as motive.
The widow Emma Theresa Rohan, their daughter Edna M. Kelley, and son Harry Rohan were named executors and to receive the residue of the estate valued over 1,000,000 dollars. The will, dated August 12, 1922, leaves 3,000 to Elizabeth Rohan. 1,000 to William, Thomas, Andrew, Mary and Alice Rohan. 250 to John Tookey James Sweeney and George Serey. 100 to AlFer ence Bohnenkemper. 1,000 each to St Theresa Catholic Home for the Aged and St Xavier College.
House Speaker Nicholas Longworth denounces the Democratic tariff plank as a thinly veiled bid to mislead voters. He argues that the plan favors foreign producers and lowers U S competitive standing, citing the Underwood era as proof of harm to American business and wages.
Harold Hendrickson, employee of Allen A. Hosiery, was abducted by four masked men six miles south of Kenosha after a highway stop. He described being dragged to a barn with a pig pen, tarred and bound, then left by the roadside before freeing himself and seeking help at Willis Steinbach’s farm. The strike at the hosiery plant since February 16 has included bombings and disorders.
Grace H. Carpenter 60 of 1023 Redway avenue faced a sanity hearing after her son-in-law Lawrence E. Tucker and wife Mildred C. Tucker reported a 1925 poisoning attempt. A private detective testified Carpenter sprinkled powder on Tucker’s breakfast cereal. a will left her a life income from decedents’ estate of over 600000 dollars.
In Washington on September 27 Herbert Hoover called the Republican Party the party of action for the benefit of the country not tied to sectional interests. He met Virginia first voters and discussed Eastern issues with party leaders including Fort Moses Work and Mann.
John Coolidge son of the President was the driver of a car owned by Gov. John H. Trumbull that crashed into another vehicle injuring hockey player Wilfred Veno seriously and Mary Veno lightly. The occupants were unhurt aside from the wrecked car.
Evelyn Reynolds 32 daughter of Kenry L. Stoddard died after plunging from a fifteenth floor window at the Mayfair House on Park Avenue near Sixty Fifth Street. She had entered the suite with gloves hat and handbag and reportedly stumbled over a low sill. The incident occurred around eight o clock as passerby narrowly escaped the fall.
Harry Harper, a California native claiming gas-crippled amnesty, caused a Newport jail riot after being jailed for disorderly conduct. Police in five officers subdued him as he wrecked the cell, ending with him charged as drunk.
Benjamin Fuelleman of the Wisconsin Republican State Central Committee renewed his call to muzzling Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt. He said Republicans do not grasp the harm she is causing after protesting to James W Good and referencing Walter H Newton's claim she would keep speaking under the Republican National Committee.
