Humboldt Tennessee report says J. R. Hodges of Macon Mississippi, a noted stock dealer, was killed when he jumped from a fast Mobile train to avoid arrest after threats from trainmen over his conduct toward a young girl aboard the same train.
In Goshen Indiana a large political meeting near Wakarusa ended tragically when boys pulling down a street flag caused a brick chimney to topple. A brick struck Jesse Kauffman a shoe merchant killing him instantly. He leaves a wife and three children.
Lydia Black an 18 year old girl was arrested on forgery charges related to two USPS money orders for 100 and 90 dollars payable to J B Cottingham of the International Migration Society. The orders were allegedly written North Birmingham before Birmingham. She denied the charge and posted bond for a preliminary trial next month.
Charles Gosler of Evansport drowned near Defiance Ohio while attempting to walk on the water to prove his faith. He had married just a week prior and was described as devout and industrious. the incident occurred September 26 near Defiance.
Herman Castymeyer was attacked by a three year old horse while leading it to water eight miles north of Lawrenceburg Indiana. The horse reared and fatally injured him with blows to the head before it was shot by a neighbor. Mrs Castymeyer rescued him with a pitchfork and the animal was later killed as it was believed to have hydrophobia.
Rev. E. C. Siler of Friends' Church West Middleton Kokomo Indiana is critically ill after a ten day hiccoughing spell. Doctors say he may die soon. He is eighty six years old and a well known minister in the state.
Garr Scott & Co a leading implement maker in Richmond Indiana closed down all departments this afternoon with 660 to 700 workers idle. The firm cites season end and unsettled finances and says it will resume after the election if sound money prevails. It is the first complete shutdown in years.
About 300 Peoria drummers en route from Canton stopped in Columbus to pay respects to Governor Bushnell. While the governor was away, Adjutant General Axline and officials escorted the group to Representatives Hall. Gen Axline and Secretary Rodgers delivered speeches as the drummers saluted McKinley by name.

Gosler, recently wed at Evansport, walked across the Tiffin River dam on baptismal faith, singing hymns, then splashed and sank. Bystanders saw him falter after several paces and drown. his body was recovered lifeless.
Ishpeming Mich Sept 26 The Lake Angeline mine famed for large annual dividends closed its workings tonight leaving about six hundred men out of work. The company invested surplus in improvements and could not sell ore or secure cash advances. Workers offered to toil three months for due bills but were refused. Iron mining prospects appear bleak.
Gus Freeman, an ex convict wanted for larceny, was shot in the thigh by Special Policeman Anderson at the Flora Fair in Indiana. Freeman, who drew a revolver, was wounded as officers attempted arrest. his leg to be amputated to save his life and he faces another prison term if he survives.
Louis C. Fent of Jeffersonville died from two bullet wounds to the brain fired by himself last Friday in a fit of despondency. His wife had recently sued for divorce. Dr. Russell of Springfield assisted but only prolonged his life a few years. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. in the M. P. Church Jeffersonville.
A disruption interrupted a Democratic speech in Crawfordsville as attendees clashed with counterprotesters outside the venue. Police reported no serious injuries and began crowd control measures to restore order.
Berlin dispatch reports severe storm damage across Germany France and England with many ships wrecked. An English bark foundered near Borkum Island with all hands, a barge capsized on the Upper Elbe drowning six, and a schooner driven ashore near Cherbourg. Never have fish been so plentiful in the Tippecanoe River near Winamac Indiana. Over 2 pounds of black bass have been taken recently. A fair day’s catch runs from 7 5 to 18 pounds. James Engle of Winamac caught bass averaging about five pounds each.
A steel worker named McKavitt from Duquesne Pennsylvania died instantly after falling from a Pittsburg excursion train on the return trip from Canton a few miles west of Alliance Ohio this evening.
Special Dienatch reports Clark & Co struck a 100 barrel oil well on the Carroll farm adjoining the Farland farm in the Catro field this morning. The well reaches only 160 feet, indicating shallow depth.
John Pirdalow of Vincennes county was fatally struck today by a Terre Haute passenger train near Hazelton while watching a ballgame. The accident occurred in Vincennes on September 26.
