Widrig announces a bold change in club direction while directors decide future plans. He states that selecting a new manager has not been considered and expresses willingness to resign the presidency at McDiarmid Expresses.
City Council passed thirty bond ordinances totaling 371 527.64 to finance street improvements already made and to be retired as assessments are collected from abutting property owners. The list names Baymiller through Windward streets and various avenues with specific amounts, alongside a Sedamsville rerouting dispute centered on Eighth Street versus Sixth Street viaducts.
Mrs Lois Pantages wife of theatrical magnate was convicted of manslaughter by a jury of five women and seven men on a second degree murder charge. The jurors gave no leniency recommendation and California law prescribes one to ten years in prison. Three women jurors cried as the verdict was read and Mrs Pantages collapsed needing her physician Dr E C Fishbaugh.
Henry L. Sanders resigns as president of the Cincinnati Car Corporation to retire to a South Carolina plantation for health. Clinge H. E. Morgan of Brooklyn elected to succeed him, bringing extensive electric railway leadership and merger experience to the firm.
The Weather Bureau warned that a tropical storm, likely hurricane strength, would strike Southeast Florida. Warnings stretched from Miami to Jacksonville as residents boarded up homes and prepared for high winds. The British steamer Domira ran aground near Great Alsace Island with 30 crew in danger. Officials urged evacuations near Lake Okeechobee amid fears of a repeat disaster.
In a dramatic late evening development Sidney Weil secured control of the Cincinnati Baseball Club by purchasing stock from Joseph Garretson and negotiating with Lou Widing. A signed notice declares Weil and Widing now have control and vow to build a winner for Cincinnati while Weil defers detailed plans and seeks counsel from Widing.
Miller Huggins grew from a Walnut Hills yard player to a renowned infielder in Cincinnati. He started on Locust street at the Twenty second District and shined in early scrubs at Bullock's Field before being courted by city teams as a high school player. He later studied law after high school.
Volcanologist Thomas A Jaggar warned of a possible simultaneous eruption of Kilauea Mauna Loa and Hualalai after a 24 hour period with 150 earthquakes in Kona. He said an eruption could occur within a month, most likely on the west flank of Hualalai, with lava possibly surfacing at Hualalai Mauna Loa or Kilauea.
Miller Huggins manager of the New York Yankees died at St. Vincent’s Hospital after a week with influenza and a facial infection that led to pyaemia. He was 49 and led the club to six pennants and three world titles in eight seasons. Four blood transfusions failed to save him.
In Chicago's negro quarter a gunfight erupts as a group of four cultists abducts Charles Kirkman, self-styled Grand Vizier Bey. Detectives Hultz and McCutcheon are killed, two policemen injured, and three cultists wounded as authorities rush in to restore order.
Mrs. Leno Weston Lane Linton, 44, of 122 East McMillan Street, files for divorce from Franklyn Linton, 47, a physician-turned-bonds seller, claiming he planned a rapid marriage to gain access to her wealth. She cites a written agreement promising half of his assets totaling about 495000 including gold mine and oil stock, fur farm, and real estate in New York and Baltimore. The May 31 wedding took place at the Courthouse with Mayor D. W. Gwaltney officiating.
Samuel Red Crane a former major and minor league infielder was convicted of second degree murder for shooting and killing his former girlfriend Della Lyter on August 3. The jury of four women and eight men deliberated a little over two hours in Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
William B. Shearer asserts in a March 10 1928 letter that his work for the New York Shipbuilding Company and related firms cost six figures and that he led unofficial efforts to defeat British propaganda at the Geneva naval conference. The record includes claims of being paid 25 000 for Geneva observer duties and 7 500 for 1926 27 services.
