General Kitchener, returning to Omdurman, reports posts at Fashoda and Sobat River with no fighting by his troops. Only a Dervish steamer on the route south was captured. Major Marchand is said to have surrendered his position to the British. The campaign’s last Khalifa forces are routed with heavy casualties among the Dervishes.
SUAKIM Sept 2 An Egyptian force of 1,30 men led by Colonel Parsons defeated the Khalifa loyalists at Gedarif after three hours of fighting capturing the stronghold on September 22. About 3,000 Dervishes faced the Egyptians with 500 killed. Egyptian casualties included three officers killed and thirty-seven soldiers killed with fifty-nine wounded.
Madrid reports that about 10,000 Spaniards living in Puerto Rico refuse to remain under the American flag and demand repatriation at government expense. The repatriation issue has been referred to the State Council for decision.
Paul Deroulede presided at a meeting opposing a Dreyfus revision. He denounced Brisson and other revision supporters and urged that if a revolution occurred in Paris the first execution would be Clemenceau. He announced plans to reconstitute the League of Patriots, a move met with police dispersal after brief demonstrations.
The Spanish steamer Cafrtagena from Aviles to Barcelona collided on September 22 off Cape Villamo with the British steamer Rheubina from Huelva to Lisbon. The Rheubina sank. all hands perished except one seaman and the Captain who were landed at Gibraltar.
The Times Peking dispatch reports Chang Yen Hoon, rival of Li Hung Chang, charged with harboring Kang Yuwei, arrested and under Board of Punishment trial. His removal would enhance Li Hung Chang's power as Empress Dowager's supporters welcome her return. Kang Yuwei cited for conspiring against the Empress Dowager, outlawed and ordered arrested.
Miss Delphins Love of St Louis secretly wed Charles Cohn of Louisville yesterday in Jeffersonville. The wedding followed a playful telephone proposal and was kept under wraps until after the Veiled Prophet ball on October 4.
National Congress of Mothers will hold meetings in Omaha October 8 9 and 10 under the Trans Mississippi Exposition invitation. All interested in the movement are invited to attend. A National Board of Managers meeting will follow the congress in Omaha.
Milwaukee September report notes that disabled Spanish-American War veterans may be admitted to National Soldiers' Homes. Senator J L Mitchell cites broad discretion for managers to admit eligible soldiers beyond Civil War cases. He believes needy disabled Spanish War veterans will be cared for if they apply and space is available, calling it humane.
In Cairo Illinois on September 25 Freight Train No 15 of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad derailed below Hodges Park at 9 30 in the forenoon. Ernest Collie a bridge carpenter was killed and three crewmen were slightly injured. The caboose jumped the track and three cars derailed blocking traffic for hours. Injured were George Beall conductor James Prove brakeman and W H Craves bridge carpenter. Collie lived in Anna.
Alabama enforces a strict quarantine against New Orleans and Jackson. Trains from fever zones pass through under lock and key with inspectors checking passengers to prevent entry or exit in the state. Fleeing residents and re routed freight disrupt rail traffic while Alabama remains uninfected so far.
Two Montreal syndicate men say Indians know where the body lies and demand 1000 for locating it. They report four months seeking along the Ashcroft trail and desolate routes to Telegraph Creek, with deaths, starvation dangers, and wrecked outfits.
In Chicago Kaufman the St Louis miller and bear leader returns home with 750000 profits from four months of short wheat selling. He rode July wheat from around 110 to lows near 68 cents and covered about 5 million bushels as prices fell.
Secretary of War Alger with Gen Sternberg and officials visited Jacksonville camp, inspected three division hospitals, and praised General Lee. He lauded the army mobilization, credited Jacksonville and Lee for camp health, and urged unity and a strong navy and standing army. Surgeon General Sternberg defended supply handling and supported female nurses.
Springfield reports Dr. Read L. Bell testified that wealthy Patrick Bolan may have died from slow arsenic poisoning. Chemist Simonson’s analysis of stomach and organs indicated arsenic presence, prompting a coroner’s inquest likely to reveal sensational disclosures about Bolan’s death.
Special Dispatch reports George Charlton, living two miles east of Kenton, was struck by his sister with an ax during a midnight investigation of a chicken coop noise. She mistook him for a burglar, crushing his skull. the thief was later identified as junk peddler Mike Smith, who was arrested.
Mrs Jefferson Davis remains in New York City due to heart condition. She avoids Colorado Springs altitude which might worsen her health. Mrs Hays will stay with her mother in New York for a period before returning to Colorado.
The Infanta Maria Teresa, a Spanish cruiser, was floated by Lieutenant Hobson's wrecking crew at Guantanamo Bay. Tow ships Potomac Newark Scorpion and Alvarado escorted her to safety, with the Newark’s Captain Goodrich aiding in salvage. The cruiser will be prepared for the voyage home aboard the Vulcan.
Fire in Manchester destroys the Goetz bakery. Bakers John Leetles and a German worker named Rob, about 30, are reported burned to death.additional details unclear due to damaged text.

One death reported from the hospital at Camp Wikoff Montauk Point GL by Sept 2. Arthur L Kaufman of Company M Eighth Ohio succumbed to typhoid fever as the lone loss noted in the day’s reports.
The Daily Telegraph Hongkong dispatch says evidence points to the emperor’s death after issuing the regency edict on September 21. A private report cites the Dowager’s regency. eunuch reports warn the emperor is seriously indisposed and may die soon. Kang Yuwei seeks refuge on a British steamer as danger looms.
The Times Shanghai correspondent reports Kang Yuwei reached Wu Hung and boarded the Ballarat bound for Hongkong. Kang said he left Peking after a secret imperial warning, blaming the Dowager Empress and Manchu officers for recent turmoil and urging England to intervene to restore the Emperor.

Russia complains and offers 10,000 troops to the Dowager Empress. the British fleet is split to intercept Russian transports near Taku and Shanhaikwan.
Captain Walter S. Thomas returns to rejoin the Ninth Battalion colored troops at Camp Meade. He reports assurances that the detachment will reach Cuba within sixty days. He praises Major Young for discipline and care of the men, saying the battalion is best fed and cared for and that criticism of Young by some is unwarranted.
In Cambridge Ohio Clarence Wiley a 16 year old janitor at the Presbyterian Church was arrested on a charge of attempting to assault four year old daughter of Police Officer Albright. The child identified him and a hearing is set for tomorrow morning.
Congressman Warner Miller and Charles L. Brown announce the 1100 acre Rogers tract in Jackson County near Ravenswood will be set aside as a public park. The land traces to a gift from King George III to Washington via Custis and the Rogers line. The plan calls the new park George Washington Park, with no clear disclosure on ownership beyond county state or federal possibilities.
Thieves blew open the Harrisville West Virginia Post Office safe Tuesday night, securing money orders, stamps, and registered items. The blast woke residents as suspects escaped. later, discarded money orders and letters were found in a nearby church, indicating the robbers used the building as a refuge.

Five men drowned in the St Marys River when the lighter Monitor foundered while being towed by the Bruce. The crew included Joseph Prior William Corbier John Robare Emanuel Robare and John Foley. Jas. Wilgus, aged 78, was drowned near West Liberty Ohio last night when his buggy drove into a washout. His horse also perished and the buggy wrecked. The body was recovered this afternoon in the Mad River three miles downstream.
Sister Bonnavventura of St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington died last night at age 45 from consumption. Born Miss Mary O'Toole of Cincinnati, she came to the hospital twenty one years ago and was among its founders. Her body will be sent to Cincinnati for burial tomorrow.
A man registered as M Putze a second cabin passenger on the steamer La Gascogne from Havre was found dead in his cabin on September 18. He appears to have killed himself by hanging at about 35 years old and left no identifying information.
