Paris reports say Count Boni insists all debts be paid before he consents to Countess Anna keeping the children. Hearings set for October 17 with potential delays if creditors press. The case hinges on heavy usury loans and prenuptial terms under French law.
A cablegram to the Navy Department reports Commander Cutter of the cruiser Galveston confirms the U S gunboat Helena has reached Shanghai safely. Earlier reports claimed the Helena was lost in the great hurricane that swept the Chinese Sea.
Cairo Illinois September 24. A. B. Warrendorf alias Charles W. Pentzen arrested tonight on a forgery charge by Memphis police, killed himself by drinking carbolic acid while registered at a local hotel from New York.
The Afton plast reports a rumor that two Russian warships seized a Swedish steamer carrying 3,000 rifles off Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
In San Juan Puerto Rico on September 24 a private in the Porto Rican Pro visional Regiment fell overboard near Moro Castle and was swept away. First Lieutenant Laurence Angelm of the Porto Rican Infantry jumped in to aid the man. After braving the current and heavy seas both officers tired but managed to bring the two men ashore with the help of Boatswain H. F. who completed the rescue.
Havana reports indicate a Liberal victory is likely after a long peace conference with American Peace Commissioners Taft and Bacon. Palma may stay to reorganize the cabinet with elections likely for half the Senate and House, and possibly provincial offices.
Paul C. Stensland former president of the Milwaukee Avenue State Bank Chicago arrived in New York after fleeing to Morocco. He plans to plead guilty to some charges and act as state’s evidence against other Chicago figures alleged to be involved in the bank’s embezzlements. His son Theodore says a signed confession was not made.
A pasteboard package found near a mailbox by David Thompson contained a match box filled with gunpowder and bullets, with a string and a Jewish New Year card on the lid. The device, designed to ignite and explode, is under investigation by Chief Postal Inspector Cortelyou.
Dispatch from Lucknow reports a boat carrying about 200 people capsized midstream on the River Indus. Only thirty survivors, believed to be traders from the provinces heading inland, are recovered.
Patrick Godfrey of 1706 Pulte Street was stabbed four times by Richard Cunningham after a trivial dispute near Western and Pulte. Godfrey was taken to Betts Street Hospital in Patrol 5 in critical condition. Cunningham, a Colerain Avenue line motorman, fled and remained at large.
Voters in Ogant saw varied results across ten wards with no landslide. Key upsets include Fenton Lawson beating John Murray by 71 votes in the Second Ward and Thomas ONeill defeating Daniel Kiefer in the Thirteenth Ward by 73. Ward tallies for executive committeemen show George Schloss leading in the Twenty-First Ward and several wards reporting lopsided margins.
Special dispatch from Atlanta reports a deadly confrontation near Clark University as County Policeman James Heard was killed and four officers wounded. Ten attackers were captured, four escaped, and a mob later assaulted two captured suspects. A white witness, Mrs. Thompson, died of heart disease watching the scene.
