Officers were withdrawn after a confrontation at the Hamilton County Supervisors office. Detective Witte defied orders, avoiding violence. Sheriff Reichel planned to withdraw deputies by nightfall as executive session proceeded and minutes were read for the record.
At the C Hall yesterday Mayor Tafel arrived about 9 as Chief Deitsch joined him and ordered police to withdraw from the Courthouse. The mayor said his board installation failed and condemned Detective Herman Witte for pulling police from the Board of Supervisors building.
The Ohio United States Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite Masons closed sessions with a banquet at the Masonic Hall. Degrees from Fourth to Thirty second were conferred on candidates from Ohio and Kentucky, with representation from Cincinnati Newport Cleveland Dayton Toledo and other cities.
Charles Marks of Montgomery County was sent to the Reformatory in Jeffersonville for an indeterminate term of one to three years after stealing a watermelon valued at ten cents. He reportedly told the court he regretted very much that the watermelon was green, reflecting philosophically on his fate.

Hamilton County settled with the State today for the June tax collection, the last county in the state to do so. The total paid into the State Treasury is 261000 plus 222 25 dollars.
Lieutenant Robert Peary arrived in Philadelphia and outlined next year’s Arctic expedition. He will base near Sherard Osborne Fjord with eight Esquimaux men and families to secure bear skins and walrus meat while a surgeon and possibly another white man join him. The American Geographical Society backs $150,000. five years’ leave granted. Mrs Peary stays behind. he aims to reach the pole despite previous failures by Nansen and Andree.
GASCIFY Ind Sept 24 Noah Johnson aged 22 shot and killed his sweetheart Miss Tacy Mang aged 16 about ten miles northeast of the city. After the slaying he ran ten miles to jail, surrendered to authorities, and fears of a mob lynching arose.
City of Mexico reports Ex-Inspector General of Police Eduardo Velasquez, 32, found dead in Belem Prison after a gunshot to the temple. A note blamed Inspector Villavicencio for instigating the crime as authorities investigate how the pistol reached him.
Special Dispatch reports in Ashtabula a caustic potash bath seriously injured the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Munkasky. The child is in critical condition and may not survive.
In Streator Illinois on September 24 striking miners in the Northern Illinois district voted to accept the Columbus scale of fortyeight cents per ton gross weight from the Springfield convention but the vote carried for rejection. Operators have refused the price and the vote signals likely winter idle for miners. The Citizens Relief Committee said it cannot provide further aid.
Kenta Ohio September 24 President McKinley may visit Xenia to fill a high post ex Congressman Hon John Little is named as a possible choice for the Interstate Commerce Commission or the Supreme Court. Justice Field plans retirement creating a vacancy opening for a close McKinley ally.
A gas explosion in Williamson County coal mines killed one man and injured several others. Frank Farraro died from asphyxiation. Injured include G Ghetti Peter Cashper and others believed to die. An unknown miner was trapped and is presumed dead. Rescuers saved those who could escape before after-damp halted the search.
John Colter once Eastern Indiana’s wealthiest man died at his Laurel home after a life marked by distillery ownership from Cambridge City to Metamora. He lost his left arm in Kentucky, raised a war company at his expense, and was jailed by a deadly temper after shooting Tim Campbell and killing Lon Auger over card quarrels. A dynamite blast later cost him his remaining arm and left him impoverished at death.
In Harristown Indiana a store owned by Jacob Garriott was burned inciting a small disturbance. A negro tramp seen around the store all day is suspected with losses around $2,000. Some residents threaten lynching if guilt is proven though no major trouble is expected.
Crowds pack Memorial Hall as Senator Hanna and Governor Bushnell speak to about 4,500 in Zanesville Ohio. They praise Ohio’s tariff progress and Campaign unity, with veterans’ group Boys in Blue attending and Lt. Gov. Jones present. Continued on fifth page.
President and Mrs. McKinley traveled through Adams to Lenox Massachusetts meeting a huge crowd. A small child climbed onto Mrs. McKinley’s carriage prompting a brief address before the party proceeded to greet Lenox Cup winner Arthur H. Fenn of Aiken South Carolina at a golf club reception.
News from New Orleans reports fever cases nearing a hundred with about 15 percent mortality. A mob attempted to burn the Buregard School to use it as a yellow fever hospital, while Mayor Flower pledged force to protect the building and the Sisters of Charity.
In Hurricane Putnam County burglars ransacked six stores and dynamited three safes at W H McCallister J C Henderson Garrett Reynolds Robert Castor Tulley Co and M T Shanks mill office. They escaped with over $3000 worth goods and about $1000 cash hauled away by wagons. Suspects believed split into two groups and had been in town two weeks.
Louisville afternoon paper claimed Captain Noel Gaines would publish an inside history of Hunter indictments to fuel a federal suit against Governor Bradley for conspiracy. Gaines issued a statement denying responsibility for the report and exonerating Bradley, saying his testimony already covered what he would say. Bradley denounced the attempt to link him with the Hunter indictments as infamous.
Ex President Cleveland purchased land near Elbow Pond in Cedar Swamp village Massachusetts. The pond holds black bass pickerel and perch and has attracted Cleveland for years. He may build a camp on the shore prompting rising hotel prices near Buzzard’s Bay and Gray Gables reach.
Gas struck near Rockcastle Hine by Farris while boring for water for a shingle mill ignited. The flare endangered surrounding property and the well was plugged to prevent further danger, with no determination of paying quantities.
Ed Staffle back, a member of the Staffleback family of alleged murderers, is confined in a straight jacket in Columbus Kansas jail. Convicted of first degree murder in the killing of Frank Galbraith, he has become a raving maniac amid mob lynching talk and searches for missing bodies in Galena.
Diphtheria spreads in Felicity Ohio delaying school openings for two weeks. The Board of Health ordered all children to stay off the streets until the outbreak is stamped out. No deaths reported to date.
