Dr Luke D Broughton president of the Astrological Society of America died today in New York. Born April 20 1828 in Leeds he studied medicine in Philadelphia and practiced in New York. He foretold life events including his own death and that of family members and authored several astrology pamphlets and a book.
General Sowder, son of Councilman William Sowder, was shot near the Half Way House in a feud rekindling between Sowder and Turner factions. Turner, son of Jack Turner, claimed he shot Sowder from his Quarter House saloon, as plans for a posse and potential battle circulated amid past killings tied to the feud.
Detroit September 23 Governor Pingree issued a public statement announcing he will not seek the Detroit mayoral nomination this fall. He cited the unwillingness of street railway owner R T Wilson to negotiate and the withdrawal of his offer to sell as reasons that ended plans for municipal ownership and three-cent fares.
