The Russkoer Slovo reports that at the late mikado’s funeral a council of the ancients chose one of their number to die as an act of homage. A drawing of lots selected General Nogi for the fatal honor, a decision by trusted friends and admirers of the late Emperor Meiji.
Akron Ohio dispatch reports Governor Johnson attacking individual effort and endorsing state paternalism to “conserve human resources” while proposing pensions and guardianship over families. Taber and Sullivan also attack party leaders, with strong criticism of corruption and calls for political renewal amid a vast audience.
Washington reports an armed guard on duty at the tomb of Mrs. John R. McLean who died at Bar Harbor on Sept 9 to deter vandalism. The guard stands at the tomb entrance as a precaution, not inside the tomb, with precedent set by guards at relatives’ graves in the same cemetery.
Acting Police Chief Schuettler said the two Canadian bank robbers who eluded capture in Chicago likely left the city. He noted cooperation with detectives in a nationwide hunt and named Morgan, Harris, Clark, West, and Porter as possible members, with Morgan once arrested here but released before any link was known.
A Newport region workhouse flogging punished twelve inmates for theft with ten or twenty lashes each. Nine victims were Negroes. Charles E Chamberlain, a white man, received twenty lashes for burglary and Prince E Lee, a Black man, twenty lashes for highway robbery. Others, all Black, got ten lashes.
American ambassador Henry Lane Wilson demands the release of W. Co. Nichols from a Tampico jail. Nichols is jailed for killing a bandit Caballos. an appeal is before Ciudad Victoria court. Wilson warns of U.S. measures and seeks better sanitary conditions for Nichols pending trial.
English aviator H. J. D. Astley was killed when his monoplane crashed during an exhibition in Belfast before about 30 000 spectators. A sharp bank into a wind caused the fall. Astley died from a fractured skull after being taken to hospital.
London report of Sept 21 states Astley was killed in a flight at Hendon while his wife, unaware of the tragedy, left the grounds in good spirits.
British aviator H. J. D. Astley and J. Valentine were soaring over Belfast when Astley fell 150 feet. He was rescued in a dying condition and died soon after at a hospital from his injuries.
Two German military officers were killed during a cross country monoplane flight near Freiburg Saxony The pair Lieutenant Berger and Lieutenant Junghans perished when their aircraft plunged from a high elevation while en route from Chemnitz to Berlin The cause remains unexplained and this marks the third double fatality in Europe this month among army flyers.
Mrs Ethel Croker Breen daughter of Richard Croker filed in the supreme court to obtain a final decree of divorce from John J Breen a riding master whom she married in Hoboken two years ago An interlocutory decree was granted three months ago after a trial revealing Breen misconduct in Toronto and elsewhere in Canada Breen faces pending damage actions by Richard Croker and his son for alienating his wife s affections. trial expected this fall
Nora Allen, imprisoned six years for arson related to a Lake Chautauqua hotel fire, confronted her husband James A. Allen in Philadelphia court on desertion charges. She said she testified to save him, claiming he was freed while she served time. Magistrate Gorman set bail at 300 dollars for the higher court.
In Columbus on September 21 a Blaine club parade drew large crowds as 350 members marched from the Blaine clubhouse through Race Street to Capitol Square. The event, timed with Republican leaders General Brown Lodge and Senator Daugherty aboard, sparked strong cheers and a show of party enthusiasm.

Huntington, Ind. Mrs. John Epps freed after 23 years in prison for her husband’s murder. Death bed confession by brother Henry Epps revealed he poisoned his sibling. Epps died in 1882. Mrs. Epps says relatives hid the truth. estate dispersed.
