President Taft addressed about 4,000 supporters at Music Hall praising Ohio river improvements and denouncing railroad traffic cuts. He urged water depth equality to prove river transport as viable and lauded Cincinnati’s role in southern trade and public culture.
Secretary of the Interior Richard A. Ballinger told Denver audiences he would dedicate time after office to reveal traducers. He defended the Interior Department’s actions and asserted his integrity, saying he would fight critics and continue enforcing conservation with prudence.
In Shelby County Kentucky 16 women refused $1 per acre offers to solicit pooled 1910 tobacco, gathering at the Carnegie library to hear President LeBus. County chairman Edward T Pollard spoke for the society, but locals rejected the plan and hopes for a large pool fade as only about 800 of 8000 acres are pledged.
H C Baldwin, a state engineer on the Miami and Erie canal, tendered his resignation to Chief Engineer James R Marker. Baldwin is the son of Barney Baldwin, a public works board member, and his resignation takes effect October 1 after Marker demanded his discharge amid a broader push to dismiss canal staff.
Oakland report says Harry Rheinstrom son of a Cincinnati family was taken into custody by police amid a delusion that someone is trying to poison him. Mrs. Rheinstrom is actress Edna Loftus.
A head on wreck near Bluffton Indiana kills forty two and injures seven on the Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley line. The southbound extra car from Fort Wayne collided with the northbound local near Kingsland on a sharp curve. Wreck left mangled bodies, farmers aided injured, and rescuers worked as physicians were summoned.
Dr Hawley H Crippen and his typist Ethel Clare Le Neve were bound over for trial for the murder of Crippen’s wife Belle Elmore. Inquest into the death remains open as court adjourns for further proceedings next Monday.
Tokio reports the Hachi Shimbun claims a group of subjects plotted to kill Emperor Matsuhito. The plotters are in custody and are to face trials before a special secret tribunal and likely death sentences.
Eleven people were injured in the wreck and Harold Nelson of Bluffton died on the train with three others dying at the hospital. The list of the injured includes F A Parkhurst of Bluffton, Fred W Jones of Warren, Co M Brown of Warren, John Eichenberger of Berne, Margaret Tribolet of Bluffton, Mrs W D Burgan of Bluffton, and B T Corkwell of Ort Wayne among others.
Springfield detachment reports Mrs. Bellamy Storer in France asserts Roosevelt authorized Storer as personal envoy to Vatican for Archbishop Ireland and pressed for Cardinal appointment. Archibishop Ireland letters from 1903 1904 cited. Roosevelt denying Storer envoy role. Letter also claims Roosevelt pledged to back Storer for ambassadorial posting and to urge McKinley to appoint him secretary of the navy.
Exposition delegation leads William Howard Taft into the music hall where joyous crowds applaud. He speaks warmly of Cincinnati, receiving stormy applause from the masses who helped rear him and showing his affection for the city.
President Taft received a warm city greeting in Cincinnati as crowds filled Music Hall and cheered wildly. He toured the Ohio Valley exposition, spoke in Springer hall, dined at the Business Men's club banquet, and visited the opera Paoletta while declining to comment on certain topics.
Old guard stung as Schenectady County Republicans back Colonel Roosevelt, directing delegates to support him for temporary chairman and favor direct primaries. Lloyd Griscom calls it a key sign in New York state politics as Woodruff remains surprised and predicts Sherman will still win the post.
