Mrs. Emma Henshaw 57 of 5825 Glenview avenue died at General Hospital after a bathroom gas stove flare set her clothing alight. Husband George Henshaw and a nurse aided by blankets and water, coroner ruled accidental burning. Funeral plans pending.
Matthew Mahoney, 25, of 116 East Front Street, was arrested after a chase along the river front and Vine Street. Policemen Lierefeld and Murphy fired several shots as he fled, then captured him near Second Street. Inside an adjacent alley, six cases of cigarettes were found in his automobile, which Mahoney admitted belonged to him and that he acted alone at the Union News Company storeroom.
John Humley 38 of 3654 Sunrise avenue Hyde Park was killed when struck and dragged beneath a C N Railroad engine for more than 100 feet at Oakley crossing. He died at General Hospital and the body sent to the morgue identified by Leonard Goebel former superintendent City Ice Company. Humley’s home is St. Louis.
Paris dispatch reports three judges elected in Martinique with margins that exceeded registered voters in districts. Prosecution says 5 000 dead men were recorded as voting for one judge while two others had similar imaginary supporters. lists allegedly prepared by the judges themselves.
Cincinnati private C S Wurst joins the U S Marine Corps after a joking reception from officers at Quantico. Brigadier General Smedley D Butler calls him the smartest sea soldier at the post. Captain Newton Best in Honolulu wires a playful note about sending Wurst to Best. The pun filled tale ends with ukuleles in Honolulu and the refrain The Worst Is Yet To Come.
One man identified as Charles Getter of New York City was killed and two others were critically injured after a clash between two automobile parties returning from the Mardi Gras Carnival at Coney Island. Police chased and captured two fleeing men, who were held at the Coney Island Police Station.
Three Maryland girls Ruth Nicholson Hazel Ritter and Emma Fulk were killed at Webers Crossing near Oakland when a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train struck the automobile they rode in. Emma Fulk died aboard the train as it was brought to Cumberland hospital. Brothers Clarence Fulk and Harry Nicholson were injured but not seriously. The youths were traveling from their homes six miles south of Oakland for a pleasure ride.
A Pennsylvania train struck an automobile in Benton City Ohio today killing J G Goldsmith 48 Edward McDowell 53 and Dorothy Goldsmith 8 of Marshville. Three others were injured including Mrs J G Goldsmith William 10 and Mrs Edward McDowell. A siding of freight cars blocked the driver’s view.
In Smyrna on Sept 19 the Turkish Crescent was replaced by the Greek Cross in public flag displays. Greek Governor Steriatis oversees restructuring. Opposition to the Greek regime arises from Greeks and foreigners, who complain of taxation and Greek regulations under the new rule.
Fire destroyed the engine room and mill house at the Knightsee Mine in Johannesburgs gold fields. Four hundred stamping machines were damaged or destroyed and losses are estimated at 100000 pounds sterling.
A torso believed to be a woman's body was found in weeds near the Ohio River cliffs below North Bend. The head and limbs were missing, clothing absent, and authorities suspect foul play as they examine dismemberment and search for identifying clues. A list of missing women from recent months is being reviewed by police.
Bishop William F. Anderson of Cincinnati laid the corner stone of a new community house in Cleveland. The Northeast Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church drew its largest crowd of the session with ordination services next day including thirteen elders eleven deacons and five deaconesses. In Carlinville Illinois Macoupin County election judges waited all day for a ballot in Cahokia precinct No 4 during the state primary but no one appeared. They reported no votes as the precinct kept neutrality.

Cincinnati shows a 6 percent drop among cities led by Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Worcester mass September 19 Prof Robert Goddart says a working model rocket using timed explosive charges will be tested within a month. The six pound device with sixty charges aims to prove the method is practicable without seeking great altitude or lightness, funded by the Smithsonian Institution.
In South Amboy New Jersey Mary Trembowitz 66 was found strangled near her son Frank’s grave. Police widened a search for the killer amid reports she may have carried money. Her husband disputed those rumors as investigation continued.
Helsingfors dispatch reports Admiral Baskolnikey of the Russian Baltic fleet ordered 100 marines executed for refusing a mobilization. The action was conveyed to London by Central News on September 19.
A series of crashes across Cincinnati and surrounding areas yesterday left Timothy Lehan dead and Maud Mullen injured on the Central Bridge while eight others suffered injuries in separate incidents. The two bodies were found on the Whitehall lawn and death is ruled a strangulation. The family plan to send Mrs Sedgewick and Ruby to Forest Port New York tomorrow where she once sang professionally in Utica.
In Cork jail the hunger strikers grow weaker with Burk and Power suffering insomnia for a week. Hennessy lies near unconsciousness while Kennedy and Donovan are grave. Joseph Kenny, an American citizen and father of seven, is identified to Father Carroll. Harold Barry seeks Canterbury intervention after forty days.
A September 14 dispatch identified Kenny as a 42 year old man and father of seven. It noted his wife was ill, causing him great anxiety and lowering morale. His condition was described as extremely critical.
