Springfield report says state experts conceded no poison or trace of cyanide was found in Florence Cavileer Smith. Defense cross examination pressured experts to reframe conclusions. Prosecutor aims to wrap up and hand verdict to the jury by next Friday as courthouse crowds pack the lobby. Florence Cavileer Smith identified as victim.
In Grand Rapids on Sept 18 two robbers burst into the J. J. Thompson jewelry shop with revolvers. Clerks were forced to surrender. both John A. Thompson and Ed Smith were shot and killed, while Paul Townsend was likely fatally wounded. The robbers escaped.
A package with 4380 dollars in cash and negotiable checks was stolen from a brewery wagon in St Louis today. William O Meara in charge witnessed two well dressed young men seize the parcel as the wagon halted before a bank to deposit funds.
In Athens on September 18 Emmet Slatcher a 30 year old Santoy miner fatally stabbed his wife who refused to live with him. Slatcher armed with a shotgun is menaced by authorities as he is pursued through Perry County.
The Lusitania carries Mayor Gaynor's body to New York. Rufus Gaynor approves the funeral plan, with arrangements including a bronze casket, a Brooklyn pier transport, and a public viewing at City Hall before burial at Greenwood Cemetery following services at Trinity Church and by Bishop Greer.
The Republicans of New York County organized for the year tonight. Resolutions were adopted for the Fusion ticket headed by John Troy Mitchell for Mayor and pledging support for him and other candidates.
The House approved a sweeping currency reform by 286 to 84 voting largely along party lines. The bill would replace the national bank note system with twelve Federal Reserve Banks and a seven member Reserve Board, while preserving the gold standard.
In Chattanooga Alfred B Beers reports 11000 Civil War veterans died in the year ending Dec 31 and 180000 remain on the Grand Army of the Republic rolls. He cites death, discharges, transfers and other losses totaling 25893 against gains. He urges Congress pension of 75 dollars a month for blind veterans and repeal of the post 15890 widow pension restriction.
Princess Sophia daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Saxe Weimar Eisenach killed herself in her father's castle amid a blocked romance with Baron Hans von Bleichroeder. Grand Duke Ernst opposed the marriage citing race and faith as obstacles. The tragedy follows rumors of family tension and the baron's banking power. continued on Page 2.
Judge Edgar Aldrich of the U S District Court in Littleton New Hampshire suspended hearing on Harry Thaw habeas corpus and awaits Governor Felker's orders on extradition to New York as Thaw status hangs on action.
Concord New Hampshire reports Mayor Charles J. French greets Harry Thaw at the Eagle Hotel amid crowds and whispers of a rumored sale of a property once owned by Mary Baker Eddy as authorities guard and monitor the fugitive.
Senator Theodore E. Burton of Ohio condemned the proposed regional reserve bank plan and the Federal Reserve Board control of currency issuance. Miss Genevieve Clark daughter of Speaker Champ Clark arrived in New York on the steamship Emperor after a five month European tour. She joked about losing weight saying she would tango. Colonel and Mrs Harvey accompanied her as chaperones during the voyage and she spoke of touring Rome Paris and France.
Washington September 17 Senate approval seals nomination of Preston McGoodwin of Oklahoma as Minister to Venezuela after a lengthy Republican challenge. The chamber also confirms numerous consular posts including Alexander M. Thackara as Consul General at Paris.
At the G. A. R. gathering in Chattanooga the four candidates for Commander-in-Chief are Colonel E. C. Adams Superior Neb Frank D Cole Jersey City N J Captain N H Kingman Selby South Dakota and Washington Gardner Albion Mich presented in two rows.
