A large Sunday crowd packed the Ohio Valley exposition with workingmen and families exploring exhibits and amusements. German and West Virginia Day are planned for tomorrow with Governor Glasscock leading a big West Virginia delegation and thousands of German visitors expected.
Atlantic City hosts the forty fourth annual Grand Army of the Republic encampment with five thousand veterans in Savoy theater hearing Rev. Robert A. Elwood. Commander Vansant and Gen. Sickles address steeplechase pier crowd promoting union and reconciliation between Civil War foes.
Brigue Switzerland Sept 18 The cross Alps flight over the Simplon pass to Italy was postponed to tomorrow due to a religious fete. Two thousand spectators protested the delay and some accused officials of keeping the crowds. Paillette Cattaneo and Wernzimer are doubtful starters. Chavez and Weymann remain confident of reaching Milan if weather holds.
Thirteen gas bags ascended from Indianapolis and drifted east by north over Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. A roving flotilla of pilots reported heavy rain storms and occasional sightings as the balloons neared Cincinnati and beyond, with Mecca of fireflooded mills and a note from the Million Population Club balloon at 2,500 feet.
Four balloons leaving Indianapolis crossed the Ohio River near Wheeling with one landing at Uniontown. The airship Drifter dropped there with pilot Albert Holt and passenger George R. Howard amid three storms at about 2300 feet. the bag grew heavy from rain forcing a descent.
The Buckeye balloon, which ascended in Indianapolis yesterday, was sighted over Charleston at 7 o'clock this evening.
Two balloons were sighted over Columbus early today with unknown names. A report from Athens noted three balloons, one named Miss Sophia piloted by William Asmap with J G McCullough as aid, dropping a message at 6 42 a m near Carpenter Ohio stating ballast left and rain all night. The Miss Sophia then passed over Pomeroy at 8 45 and another balloon seen there at 12 30 p m going eastward. its name was not learned.
In Lisbon on September 18 King Manuel named sixteen new peers, all backers of the current ministry. He also issued a decree granting amnesty to those who offended the government through newspapers.
Count Kielmansegg the governor of Lower Austria his wife and nephew were driving home from an aviation meeting at Wiener Neustadt when a shot was fired through the windscreen of their auto. No one was hurt.
President Taft announced plans to recommend a 2,000,000 appropriation to begin fortifying the Panama Canal and to seek two new Dreadnaught type battleships. He argues canal completion will double naval efficiency and allow future shipbuilding to slow. The trip itinerary from Beverly to Cincinnati and on to Washington is outlined with cabinet meetings to follow.
President Taft will spend a few hours in New Haven as a private observer of Yale University affairs. The Yale corporation fall meeting is expected to discuss professor salary increases and the possible appointment of President Hadley to the railroad bonding commission.
Theodore Roosevelt nears the New York state convention in Saratoga as he returns to Sagamore Hill from Syracuse. He refuses to detail his strategy for seeking or resisting a Taft administration endorsement and signals no public comment until the Saratoga meeting.
American apples command higher prices in the English market, reports Albert W. Swalm, American consul at Southampton. A Wenatchee Washington shipment sold at 8 to 12 cents a pound, with buyers eager to pay. The key is good fruit, proper packing and avoiding auctions where price control may occur.
Special Dispatch reports from Millersburg Kentucky that Burley Tobacco Society President LeBus warned the fate of the 1910 pool and the growers movement would be decided within ten days. He urged immediate ballot printing and emphasized collective action to pool tobacco or face market consequences and outsider disruptions. Sept. 27 described as Judgment Day with strong language about unity and responsibility.
Captain Klaus Larsen sailed the Ferro through Niagara's whirlpool rapids from Maid of the Mist to Lewiston despite engine trouble and near-misses. The boat capsized near the American shore, but Larsen escaped unharmed and vowed to try again with another vessel.
Minnesota voters set to choose congressmen and legislators Tuesday in a high stakes primary. Rising fights center on James A. Tawney in the First district with Gifford Pinchot Heeney and even Theodore Roosevelt involved, while F. C. Stevens Nye and others face progressive challengers in the Fourth and Fifth districts.
