Indianapolis observer Edward P. Clancey recalls near eye witness moment of President McKinley’s shooting in Buffalo. He describes the president’s pained look and the strike that felled the assassin, noting the actor’s race as white while a black man drew attention nearby.
The American Federation of Labor executive council chose Vice President Max Morris to attend the Ohio State Federation of Labor convention in Youngstown on October 1. The aim is to pacify unions in Ohio over issues at the last annual convention. Resolutions urged reenactment of the Chinese exclusion law before its 1902 expiration.
The Ohio State Liquor League ended its three day convention in Findlay out of respect for President McKinley’s death. An anarchist from Cleveland named Frank Idings has been imprisoned at Columbus after boasting of belonging to a group that would pay $500 for the killing of President Roosevelt. He will lose all good time accrued and must serve two more years of a seven year term for burglary and larceny with hard labor.
The Czar and Czarina with M. Loubet arrive at Compiegne after a guarded march from Dunkirk. A four horse landau leads the imperial party with bayoneted escort along electrified streets. Cannon salutes, bands, and illuminations mark the visit to the castle where both heads of state dine separately.
Sept. 18. S. A. Seipel who choked nearly to death ex mayor Richardson after McKinley was shot and for inflammatory remarks received a fine solid gold ring from Californians who applaud his act.
Hazen T. Titus of the Chicago and Alton dining car service launched a fund drive among 9 000 employees from Kansas City to Chicago to raise 50 cents per person for a presidential memorial monument along the line.
J Frazer Willetts a Canton Ohio letter carrier swears he can identify the man seen with Leon Czolgosz on the steamship between Cleveland and Buffalo the night of the assassination He says he saw the accomplice in the company of the killer and fears for his life while under police protection in Canton awaiting further testimony.
In Canton Ohio a frightened Italian named Carmine Deyviatro was accused of threatening President Roosevelt. A crowd gathered shouting Lynch him as Major Margulis and Ohio militia formed a square and withdrew the man to police headquarters for protection. The police deem the threat not credible.
Deputy State Superintendent T E Drake cites a 150000 life policy for McKinley. He recalls Governor McKinley saying 50000 initially, then 100000 with a loan arrangement, sold by Bokum of New York Life in Cleveland and later kept in force until death.
Washington dispatch reports an imperial edict from the Empress Dowager through Wu Ting Fang condoling the death of the U S President. It praises the late leader's friendship and just policies and expresses unspeakable sorrow and condolence to the United States government.
