A group of 139 refugees arriving in San Diego aboard the Buffalo recount that they fled Yaqui Valley under US warnings. They say they left only because President Wilson urged Americans to depart and that neither side harmed their homes or property during the conflict.
Eight long term inmates from State Farm Valatie traveled unguarded to Great Meadow Prison aboard the 7:45 train. Warden John Healy accompanied them and purchased tickets. The group, mostly in overalls with blankets, includes manslaughter convicts awaiting parole review.
In Los Angeles on September 17 Judge Bledsoe presided over a motion to exclude the public from the trial of Long Beach capitalist George H. Bixby who is indicted on charges tied to the recent morality crusade. The judge rejected the request, ruling a public hearing could not be lawfully waived.
In Birmingham on September 17 attendees debated Piltdown skull reconstructions. Dr Smith Woodward supports a smaller brain model while Dr Keith argues for larger brain capacity. William Dawson reexamines remains and reportedly finds new evidence.

BAY CITY, Mich. Sept 17 All coal mines in the Michigan district were closed today by operators who say they will not reopen until union Handy Bros. Mining Co Bay County differences are settled. About three thousand men affected. Davis commissioner cites union refusal to arbitrate after 700 men struck over pay under 1912 April working agreement. Governor Ferris will discuss with legislature. Miners union orders a strike next Tuesday extending to all collieries in District No. 15 Colorado Utah New Mexico. Operators insist on talking only with their own employees.
Officials of western coal fields announce a strike call as labor action spreads in the region. Details on participating unions and affected mines were not immediately available.
London reports a prolonged union strike threat as lockouts in Dublin trigger sympathy actions by Liverpool dockers and Birmingham rail workers. The three main Midland railways and Manchester Ship Canal face disruption as Liverpool freight depots go idle and traffic declines.

Prominent Jews organized the Anti-Defamation League of America to combat defamation of Jews by appeals to reason and conscience and, if needed, law. Under Bnai Brith, with 30 000 members, it will operate nationwide with theater, press, and education actions and a 1000‑strong citizen committee.
