The council sent the Miller Ankenbauer bill to Mayor Dempsey to review the $4622 charge for expert investigation into city departments. The Finance Committee notes the mayor appointed the experts and should know if the fee is reasonable.
Six Dravo Contracting Company workmen on the U S Government Dam No 2 at Aspinwall Pa jumped into the Allegheny River as a stone laden barge sank. All but one were Italians and none could swim. The six were drowned and bodies recovered with shore aid.
The National Negro Baptist Convention held a stormy session on September 16 and hotly debated the Brownsville affair. Presiding Officer Morris threatened to leave as leaders hoped to keep politics out of the discussion. The group deplored the incident and praised Hon. B. Foraker and others for securing soldiers the right to be heard in their own defense.
Washington D C Sept 16 The Town Exposition Company has missed the September 15 payment of 100000 on its government loan and has not advised when the next installment will arrive Only four payments totaling about 100000 have been made with the fair running two and a half months longer and owing 900000 The largest payment was 50000 earlier this month A Treasury official said no government run of the exposition is planned and receiving small payments is better than none to avoid a large debt.
The State Board of Arbitration reports that strikes and lockouts cost Ohio workers $2,750,000 in the past year. About 50,000 men were involved, with strike durations from one day to six months. The board spent $4,000 on operations and urges mutual recognition and proactive talks between employers and workers to curb disputes. It notes underreporting due to some employers failing to notify authorities of strikes or lockouts.
Mrs. Hilda Junnikka of Cincinnati is confined in the Worcester Insane Asylum for allegedly going mad from worrying about her missing husband. The couple separated briefly, crossed paths multiple times, and when he reached Cincinnati again he came back to Worcester to locate her. Her baby was sent to the City Farm.
Urban H. Broughton testified in the Supreme Court that Henry H. Rogers is in very weak physical condition with distorted speech and left-side impairment. Rogers Jr. corroborated, noting only three checks and a power of attorney signed since July 22, and that Rogers suggested he was nearly done.
David Walke of Manchester underwent brain surgery to remove a clot after a fall left him unable to speak and with limb paralysis. Following trephining weeks earlier, he regained speech and movement and was discharged from the hospital in Richmond on September 16.
Sigmund Klein a Cincinnati wholesale liquor firm member collapsed and died in a Springfield saloon while attempting to sell a bill of goods. Local authorities report no further details available about the death or cause.
In Morgador near Owenton Kentucky on September 16 Mrs Mary Barr an 80 year old woman committed suicide by inhaling water from a tiny spring. She was found by her grandchildren. She had told her son she planned to die and where to find $150 in old coins near her home.
Robert Hartsell was sentenced to twenty years in a Philadelphia penitentiary after pleading guilty to twenty three charges of arson and theft. He and Daniel J Adams were linked to fires at three Allentown businesses causing about one hundred thousand dollars in losses. Adams also received twenty years for arson in Northampton County.
A 4 to 1 vote by the Board of Public Service discharges eleven Hamilton County Democratic Executive Committee members for voting to select convention delegates by a three person committee. Discharges take effect Wednesday, Sept. 18, with names including Thomas J. Noctor James Condron John Daugherty William Glaescher Theodore Bracken John McGinn Henry Siemer F. F. Oakley Edward Miller Philip Tiernan and others.
Rear Admiral John G Walker U S N retired died suddenly at High Pasture York Cliffs York Beach Maine aged 72. A New Hampshire native, he was famed for his Panama Canal research and chaired the Isthmian Canal Commission in 1897 earning 1000 dollars monthly. He helped build the U S Navy fleet and served in the Civil War, including Vicksburg and Yazoo campaigns.
London dispatch reports amateur swimmer Jabez Wolffe saving Lillian Edwardes of Ohio from drowning off the Dover shore while she swam from the steamship. Despite cramps, Wolffe reached her, pulled her aboard unconscious, and restoratives revived her. He then resumed his Channel crossing trial with Stearne, making progress.
Evangelist Felix Lawrence of Nashville collapsed and died of heart disease after delivering a mission address at the Hope Rescue Mission in Louisville. Converted seven years ago at the mission, Lawrence had devoted his work mainly in Nashville before traveling to Louisville for a reunion.
A mid dle aged woman identified only by her accredited agent allegedly lost or was robbed of 196000 in cash and 40000 in diamonds on a New Haven line local train from Stamford to Grand Central. Police and train crews conducted a swift but fruitless search this morning.
Advices from Casablanca report that Moor tribal delegates accepted General Drude's peace conditions and left to gather delegates from other tribes. They are expected to return Thursday to begin broad re admission of hostile tribesmen.
At a Cumminsville board of education session a proposed Pitts Colerain avenue site faces opposition from the Bruce avenue plan and a Banning offer to sell and grade for 51 927.50. Supporters claim Pitts would boost growth with rapid transit and a park opposite while opponents argue for the Bruce avenue location. The vote was deferred to Monday night amid heated debate.
