Captain Roald Amundsen arrives in Seattle after Nome voyage and sails for Sitka to finish three year magnetic observations. He claims potential locating the North Magnetic Pole and notes aurora borealis may affect the compass. Instruments used for the study were lost on departure, hindering work.
Terre Haute, Sept 16. Orders were issued by district officials of the United Mine Workers of America calling out all Vandalia Coal Company workers in Indiana. Dispute stems from three men fired at Vandalia Mine No. 5 near Linton over shots fired before the joint agreement time. Company says firing caused discharge. miners say mine was idle. A joint meeting of the Executive Board and operators failed to resolve the grievance, and locals were notified to suspend work until settled. Terre Haute agreement allows suspension at all Vandalia mines if trouble occurs at one.
Paris reports a counterfeiting ring with fifty members including Latin Quarter students whose parents hold high posts. They passed ten and twenty franc coins electroplated with gold dust, totaling about 200 000 francs over recent months. The group had operations in England and Germany and planned to expand to Chicago and Buenos Aires.
More than 2,000 people attended the municipal ball in Panama Saturday night honoring M Root with Sohail Charleston and Jeff Calla on board.

Piqua Ohio September 16 Lester Robert Schrock sixteen son of Joseph A Schrock Monroe Ohio was killed in a wreck between a Co D passenger train and a Pennsylvania freight. The passenger train an Sunday excursion was moving to main track when the freight crashed into it. Passengers panicked but all escaped except Schrock.
Lester Schrock, son of farmer Joseph Schrock near LeSourdsville, died from injuries after the C. H. D. excursion wreck near Piqua. His mother arrived just before he passed. John T. Ward of the Grand Theater survived unhurt.
John Moritz a 19 year old telegraph company messenger was shot and killed by gambler Jack Thompson in Goldfield during the early hours after an alleged bump at a dance hall. Moritz who lived in St Paul fell from his wheel after the first shot and Thompson delivered a fatal second shot as he lay.
The cruiser Fiona departed St Johns Newfoundland with provisions and supplies for eleven fishing vessels wrecked in Friday night gales in the Strait of Belle Isle. A total of 140 people aboard these ships barely escaped. The vessels and cargoes are considered a total loss. The Fiona will bring the fishermen to safety.
The Navy Department has been informed that the naval tug Potomac sailed today from New York for Newfoundland to prosecute a fisheries inquiry. Prof. Alexander was aboard as the Fish Commission representative.

Gallipolis reports James Bowles, fifteen year old son of J. F. Bowles of Dexter, was attacked by three tramps on a K. and M. freight train. After looting his pockets they pushed him from the moving locomotive, severing both legs below the knees. He lies at the Marine Hospital in grave condition.
In Helena Montana on September 16 Chief of Police Flannery shot and killed T P Purdue a traveling painter from Kansas City and was wounded in the leg. Purdue was part of a five man group resisting a search after one member was accused of begging.
Albert Roberts 24 of Price Hill was arrested for drunkenness after bragging he could solve the murder of George McDonough within 24 hours. He provided conflicting statements at Ninth District Police Station and was later to be confronted by Miss Daisy Wilder and other witnesses. The funeral for McDonough was held at Ninth Street Baptist Church with a large crowd and interment at Spring Grove Cemetery.
In Paris on September 16 demonstrations occurred as some stores remained open against the compulsory rest day. Police charged a mob of about 400 in the Ternes district, arresting twenty. other demonstrations were dispersed.
In a jealous rage over Emily Poston dancing with a rival, John White of Evansville shot and fatally wounded her in Hopkinsville Kentucky. He was pursued two miles but escaped.
Frederick L. Rothermel, partner and elder brother of investment broker William G. Rothermel, was found dead at his Philadelphia home. Police say the death mirrors his brother’s earlier suicide amid financial crisis. the coroner orders an investigation.
Lightning hit the powder magazine at Fort Mont Faucon in France on September 16 killing seven people and wounding many others.
