A mob in Ripley County Indiana killed five men, hanged three and beat two to death, with two more wounded and dragged to death. Reports describe widespread fear, threats against jail and courthouse, and a public mood of no police pursuit as the coroner’s inquest begins.
Springfield report notes only 256 attendees of a promised 200000 visitors for a free silver camp meeting. Promoter Roberts expected crowds, Allen Thurman chaired opening, while a brass band marched and played amid scorching heat as arrivals lagged.
Five men snuffed out by a mob in Versailles were hanged near Cedar Creek after jail breaks and shootouts. The town remains on edge with deputies patrolling roads and debates over law and vengeance. The dead include Lyle Levi, 57, Wm Jenkins, 28, Henry Shutter, 24, Bert Andrews, 30, and Cliff Gordon, 21.
Charles H Boynton night manager of the Associated Press married Florence Gaines at the Church of the Covenant in Washington. Prominent guests included Secretary and Mrs. Alger, Secretary Gage and Mrs. Gage, Assistant Secretary Vanderlip, Roosevelt, and others. Best man was William D Farwell of the New York Tribune. The couple left for the North after the wedding breakfast.
A non English speaking man, whose identity could not be learned, was arrested in Marion Ohio on loitering charges. Police found on him three pairs of pants four vests two coats and a heavy overcoat with trinkets in every pocket. He had four large bundles of old clothing lashed to his body by ropes and leather straps.
The Luetgert murder trial moved toward closure as prosecutors said all witnesses would be on the stand by Saturday noon. Professor Dorsey identified bones from the sausage factory as female femur and left temporal bone, while Drs Pierce and Dorsey testified amid intense cross examination to come tomorrow.
Information from Decatur reports Edward Flanagan the condemned murderer escaped from the jail last night. A note on the sheriff’s table claimed he would be gone, saying friends helped him with a key to the outside lock and that he was going to the country to be free.

Parkersburg West Virginia report says Mrs Edw Hitchins who killed oil operator William Beatty by throwing vitriol was forced to have her foot amputated to save her life from the effects of the acid. Authorities cease efforts to arrest her for murder.
