American troops on the Lorraine front captured Thiacourt Pannes and Nousard as Pershing forces reached Combres. French troops with the Americans moved toward St Mihiel and Dermartin Montagne fronts. Cavalry patrols pushed toward Vigneulles amid German resistance near Roman Fort.
Paris report says French forces advanced toward the Woolnon-Savy road three miles west of St Quentin. British operations north of Havrincourt and Cambrai area yield Trescault Moeuvres and gains north of Armentieres with about a thousand German prisoners.
British troops stormed Havrincourt on September 12, advancing into the shell shattered town on a dominating ridge above the Hindenburg line. Reports said forces were in the town as part of the forward defenses with continued coverage on the second page.

Cadets F. J. Oliver of Sioux City Iowa and F. P. Slater of Trenton North Carolina were killed when their planes collided 300 feet above Rich Field and crashed to the ground in Waco Texas on September 12.
Major Robert E. Lea of Danville Virginia, attending NRA matches at Camp Perry Ohio, was shot in the chest by a stray bullet while standing before his tent. Surgeons say he has a chance to live and an investigation has been ordered.
W A Chamberlain of Pittsburg bid 1 312 000 for the Orenstein Arthur Koppel holdings in Koppel Pa and Hoboken N J in an auction conducted for the Custodian of Alien Property. Eight bidders deposited 50 000 each as the sale closed in half an hour with bids rising from 1 0 0 0 0 0 to 1 311 000.
American forces in the St Mihiel sector reported by General Pershing to the War Department made considerable gains. Allied units aided by French troops broke enemy resistance and pushed forward up to five miles in places. A total of 8,000 prisoners had been counted so far as the operation continued.
Paris September 12 The first large American offensive between the Meuse and Moselle began at daybreak under General Pershing's personal supervision and orders from American officers with American soldiers. It marks the first distinct large scale American operation on the western front.
