A crew of fifteen aboard the PN. 9 No.1 carrier was found alive after nine days missing at sea. They were picked up by a searching submarine 15 miles off Kauai Island, restoring hope to their families and marking a daring ocean rescue.
In Vinton Iowa on September 10 authorities probe the murder of Mrs C B Cook Benton County W C T U president. A pastor claims she held the highest county office in the Ku Klux Klan and two masked men questioned Mrs Kleckner about her Klansman husband. Six of seven youths confessed to rotten eggs thrown at Cook home July 6, all released on bail. Investigators seek Charlie Perifield who warned more murders, as Benton County officers plan cross examination to uncover further killers.
Stockholders of Cincinnati Street Railway, Ohio Traction, and Cincinnati Traction ratified the December 31, 1924, merger proposal transferring Cincinnati Traction into Cincinnati Street Railway. Meetings also discussed postponing sale of Millcreek Valley lines until October 9 and planning equitable distribution of about $1,000,000 in stock. A Taft explained capital structure and a committee was named to draft the fair plan for both preferred and common shareholders.
New York World News Service reports actor Richard Bennett announced plans to marry Thelma Morgan Converse sister of Mrs. Reginald Vanderbilt. He said mutual love for the stage prompted the engagement after prior marriages. Converse is pursuing divorce. Bennett’s own divorce recently occurred.
Cleveland Ohio September 10 State Senator George H Bender pleaded not guilty to refusing to give information to a state prohibition officer under the Miller act and posted 500 bond. He was arraigned in Rocky River Village and hearing set for September 21. McDonald aides called him a flunkie and the dispute interrupts a larger dry enforcement war. Witnesses from Patrick perjury case also face subpoenas as district attorney Stanton prepares further action.
Washington, Sept. 10. Acting War Secretary Davis pressed for a full inquiry by a disinterested agency into Mitchell's charges about Army and Navy air policies. He seeks discipline of Mitchell, truth of the charges, and whether a unified air service would improve national defense. Secretary Wilbur resists. Davis began disciplinary steps toward a court martial.
Reported details of experiences since airmen were forced down are scant as hope for the expedition wanes. The craft remains in tow by a rescue boat about 300 miles from the intended goal after gasoline ran out.
President Coolidge returns to Washington after an eleven week absence and resumes work at the White House. Cabinet members Kellogg Hoover Jardine and Grew meet with him as he weighs coal distribution plans and anthracite field suspensions. Senator Butler accompanies him. traffic safety and aviation policy also rise in priority.
Traffic crash at Kellogg avenue and McCullough street involved a five person auto and a Cincinnati Georgetown Portsmouth interurban bound for the Coney Island race track. Four automobile passengers suffered slight injuries. two children from 208 McCullough street were treated and discharged. Motorman Harry Pitcher commanded the interurban car. the auto driver faced police reports that weed obscured the view of the oncoming vehicle.
In North Nashville, a prowler terrorizing the area was confronted by J. W. Littrell on his sleeping porch. Littrell suffered a knife wound in the scuffle before firing a shotgun blast that felled the intruder as the man fled. Neighbors were alerted by M Clara McPherson’s screams. she reported a man grabbed her ankle but she remained unharmed.
New York reports Leonard Wood Jr son of the Philippines governor general filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition in Brooklyn. He lists liabilities at 14 585 and assets at 742 with debts to fifteen individuals and four concerns. He previously faced oil stock promotion scrutiny and had ties to a failed theatrical venture in Scranton, with attorney Henry Klauber asserting solvency if creditors pressed.
Special Dispatch to The Commercial Tribune reports Peter J. Farley a 42 year old former pugilist and soda stand proprietor killed instantly when his car failed to yield to a northbound Cincinnati and Dayton traction car at Symmes road and Mt. Pleasant pike. His brother Tim, 36, a fatally injured survivor, died later at Mercy Hospital. Witnesses say the auto was speeding. coroner notes malt in the car. Tim leaves a wife and six children. Surviving sisters include Mrs Mary Huesing and Mrs Henry Welsh.
Police believe a husband’s vengeance over a missing wife and her escort motivated the killings of Fred La Blue, 60, Rochester, and the shooting of Grace Volpe, 45, Pittsburg Pa. The pair were shot in front of La Blue’s home after Volpe left her husband and children two months earlier to live with La Blue’s mother.
John Ambler, Commander of the Ohio G. A. R., is in critical condition in Youngstown after a cerebral hemorrhage. He is 81 years old.
Columbus Ohio September 10 1924 B F McDonald State Prohibition Commission said Inspector Allen sent to Cleveland to obtain a list of 600 open liquor sites from State Senator Bender to issue a subpoena for Bender to hand over the information. Governor Donahey supports McDonald and the process. The confrontation with Bender led to a demand for the list, with Mullen asserting the subpoena and hearing are authorized by the Miller Act.
Federal license of John Brant chief engineer of the Mackinack excursion steamer was revoked by local inspectors of the United States Steamboat Inspection Service. He faced charges of negligence in keeping boilers in unfit condition and failing to report repairs to the boilers to the inspection office after the Newport Harbor explosion that killed fifty three.
Thousands of pearls cover the remains of four mound builders at the Seip group near Bainbridge Ohio in what officials call the burial of pearls. Copper helmets tortoise shell beads and pottery were found with the bodies. Guards stand watch as the mound is opened and valuables slated for removal.
Commander John Rodgers and four crew members were found alive fifteen miles east of Kauai by the submarine R-4 after ten days missing. The PN-9 No. 1 departed from San Francisco August 31 for a nonstop flight to Honolulu. Gasoline exhaustion forced a landing and a long search followed before recovery near Kauai.
In San Francisco on September 10 the PN-9 No. 1 radioed Governor Wallace R. Farrington of Hawaii promising to see him tomorrow after a plane battled a storm and went down. Commander John Rodgers was involved in the incident.
