A Houston AP correspondent relays a Galveston disaster where, with the city submerged and up to 1,000 feared dead, refugees flood into higher ground. Wrecked homes, collapsed orphanages, and ruined mills fill the landscape as aid pours in from across the United States while Texas and Gulf coast counties suffer crop and property losses.
War report from General McKibben states a relief train is to depart, amid storms along a fifty mile front west and southwest of Houston. Despatch notes mass casualties with estimates up to five thousand and one million dollars in property damage.
Dallas News manager reports estimates from reliable observers range 1 500 to 6 000 dead after Galveston flood and hurricane force winds. Water ten feet deep on parts of the island wrecked vessels and homes, with property losses described as irreparable and life losses appalling. Relief urged via Governor Sayers at Austin.
A Houston to Galveston storm update notes widespread destruction from wind and water. Bridges to Galveston Island are destroyed, isolation persists, and 25 miles of coastline report heavy losses with multiple deaths and missing persons. Sugar plantations and cotton crops suffer, and mainland losses exceed a million dollars with ongoing relief challenges.
A San Antonio dispatch says 120 soldiers at Fort San Jacinto Galveston area saw only 15 escape and the fort’s captain is among the dead while Lt. Col. C. Roberts tours Galveston. Other notes report Beeville, Wharton, Hallettsville damage and Galveston flood relief underway.
In Sturgis Kentucky on Sept 10 Thomas Holt and Cora Waller, engaged to wed, die in a dramatic deadly scene after Holt shoots Waller and then kills himself. Dr. Clark is arrested as the investigation unfolds with neighbors gathering at the scene.
Columbus Ohio September 10 Hon Seth Low New York reformer addressed about 3000 at the Board of Trade building tearing the mask from democracy He argued most politicians applaud the national administration on China and that the US would have faced foreign powers without the Spanish American war He said imperialism is not a plan but the US is expanding under McKinley becoming a money lending nation with success domestically and abroad State Chairman Dick attended and spoke on stage.
The Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce moves to aid Galveston after the gulf coast storm. A relief committee including Captain R W Wise and General Michael Ryan is appointed to raise money and material, with Mayor Fleischmann backing the effort and sending messages to Houston and Texas officials.
Houston reports Galveston is in ruins with hundreds dead after a hurricane. The Mayor and Citizens' Committee appeal to President McKinley for urgent state and national relief including food clothing and money. The telegram notes 84 mph tempest and 12 foot flood surge, with bridges washed away and stranded steamers in the bay. Richard Spillane is cited.
