Chicago packing firm representatives are in St. Petersburg exploring meat sources in the Caucasus and Western Siberia. The Caucasus region offers abundant sheep, though remains largely untapped.
Attorney General A G Denman seeks to oust National Cash Register of Dayton from 15 charter and declare it a trust. The suit alleges a Dayton graveyard room with rival cash registers, defunct firms listed on placards, and signals to deter competition. It accuses price manipulation, spy networks, dummy corporations, and below cost sales to squash rivals. The petition claims NCR amassed 10 million dollars by such methods.
Norfolk, Va. Sept 9 The marksmanship of American gunners in practice is praised as the one thing to prevent naval defeat if ships level their guns before an enemy fires. Officers say rough water drills along the Atlantic battleships and cruiser fleet display marvelous gunnery. The fleet continues target work in a light SE wind.
Pittsburg Pa Sept 9 Over 3 000 men are at work in the Pressed Car company plant today with over 1 000 waiting to reenter the office and reclaim old positions. By Saturday morning the entire force will be back to work totaling over 6 000. Early today 500 imported workers were moved to an Ohio river steamer then taken to Bellevue and trained for Chicago and New York. State troopers and guards are expected to be withdrawn by Saturday.
Acting Attorney General Wade H Ellis and U S District Attorney Jordan with Special Agent Hoagland presented the final report on the McKees Rocks strike at Pressed Steel Car Co. alleging no clear peonage or federal labor law violations. 3,500 workers had been involved over eight weeks.
President Taft has sent for Attorney General Wickersham to Beverly to discuss matters of importance including a dispute between the interior and agriculture departments over conservation and public land laws. The attorney general is also involved in the Cunningham coal land case and a patent motion. Taft aims to amicably settle Washington disputes and prepare speeches for a Western tour.
Bridgman notes that separate trip accounting is lacking and equipment from prior expeditions inflates costs. The Peary Arctic Club has spent more than 300000 since 1898, with earlier private voyages by Peary in 1891 to 1897 not included. John R Bradley estimates 70000 for the Cook strip, 50000 supplied by Bradley, the rest by Cook.
Dr Frederick Cook plans to sail Saturday from Christiania aboard the Scandinavian American Miner Oscar II for New York, with arrival due about Sept 20 or 21. Captain Roald Amundsen may accompany him, and Danish officials say plans to bring back Eskimo companions will wait until spring.
