At a party meeting held today in the state capital Jno M Clark emerged as the leading candidate for governor after a conference among senior leaders. Supporters acclaim him as a strong choice to lead the ticket with broad appeal and experience.
Delegates at the Columbus convention debated preserving the party while opposing the silver wing. Ex congressman Joseph Outhwaite is favored for U S Senator if John H Clark declines head of the ticket, with Harmon unlikely. A steering panel and resolutions committee set to submit plans for Friday's convention.
Delegates in Cleveland discuss ballot alignments between Republican and Democratic tickets in Cuyahoga County while an independent ticket could sway votes. Max May arrives as convention secretary with Dan Wilson and C M Hepburn, Julius Dexter opposes U S Senate endorsement, and W D Bynum to attend. After three weeks of hypnotic treatment her mind was suddenly restored, a result puzzling physicians in Bellefontaine Ohio.
General Fitzhugh Lee arrives in New York from Havana with his son and James Fishback. He discusses potential pardon for Evangeline Cisneros and says Weyler would have pardoned her absent the public uproar. Lee hints at a Senate bid and possible UVA presidency, then departs for West Point and Washington.
Hawaii natives fear a staged mass meeting to sway Senators Morgan and Quay during their investigative visit. California's White and Nebraska's Thurston will lead the anti annexation fight in Congress and plan to supervise a petition claiming American minister Stevens stole the government. The Interstate Miners' Convention adjourned without a vote on accepting the Pittsburg operators' settlement. Illinois opposes it saying miners in that state were ignored. Annapolis notes nine new cadet candidates entered the Naval Academy to date total 45. Of those who passed mental tests three or four were rejected mainly for eyesight and some will be re-examined. In Lancaster Pennsylvania 8 year old James Keemer playing near Shippen Street Bridge was bound to railroad tracks by a half witted man named Weaver who waited for a train before he fled when the boy's mother arrived Keemer was rescued and unharmed by his mother or others nearby.
L. and Hutchens a South Bend druggist has disappeared leaving a letter stating intent to kill himself and showing evidence of defalcations from the United States Express Company for which he was subagent.
Alonzo Johnson coal dealer and Charles Haney truck man clashed over a pill. Haney slashed Johnson in the back and side with a knife, leaving Johnson severely wounded and possibly fatally hurt.
The Duke and Duchess of York completed a busy visit to Ireland by boarding the royal yacht at Belfast Lough for Glasgow. The royal couple concluded a successful tour of portions of Her Majesty's dominions.
General James Longstreet, former Confederate general and U.S. minister to Turkey, married Ellen Dortsch at the Georgia Governor's Mansion in Atlanta. The ceremony in the Blue Room was attended by state officials and intimate friends, with Judge J B Gaston as best man and Governor Atkinson guiding the bride. The couple planned two weeks at Porter Springs before Longstreet resumes librarian duties in Georgia.
In Toledo Ohio on September 8 Knights Templars held a Grand Commandery opening session with remarks by Grand Commander Barton Smith Grand Prelate Rev James Montgomery and Mayor Sam Jones. Governor Asa S Bushnell attended as guest and spoke on Masonry and Springfield home for indigent Masons. A parade with 20 commanderies and 16 bands drew about 30000 watchers. A reception at the Valentine Theater capped the evening.
Lutie A. s, 23, a Negro from Tennessee, was admitted to the Tennessee bar in Criminal Court at Nashville aided by Central Tennessee College. She is claimed as the first colored woman admitted to Tennessee and the only living colored woman member of the bar. She aims to practice in Kansas. She appeared in Memphis en route.
St Louis jewelers report pearl fisheries in the West and Southeast failing to pay. Thousands of specimens sent for inspection yield only a few usable buttons worth five to one hundred fifty dollars. Eleven perfect pearls found, all from one Kansas town, while most offerings are returned as worth less.
The Cleveland Oil Company of Cleveland Ohio paid 21000 for Dr J Bolards lease and production on the Sam Corbett farm in the Waverly field four miles above Marietta Ohio The four producing wells yield ninety six barrels daily and the sale is viewed as fair given current oil prices. Further sales of good production are anticipated as negotiations continue.
In Cleveland on Sept 8 Senator Hanna and Major Dick hosted a crowd in the Perry Rayne Building. Delegations from Akron and Toledo discussed prospects with Hanna and Dick led by ex Mayor E R Harper and F A Selberling. Distinguished guests included ex Secretary of State Daniel Ryan of Columbus and Republican Committeeman Henry C Payne from Wisconsin.
In Marietta Ohio, Jacob Gudermuth long thought dead after disappearing six months ago is believed found alive in California. He had offered $60,000 for a farm royalty and fled the dispute over mineral rights. A body washed ashore earlier was thought to be him, but a telegram from California reveals a marriage plan to a woman named Polina in Virginia.
Frank Hannis aged 18 died after cramps while swimming in the Ohio River just north of Bellaire Ohio. Authorities report the incident occurred today with the victim overcome by cramps during a swim.
The Board of Health reports no new New Orleans fever cases and a vastly improved situation after the Gelpi child’s death. Dr Guiteras inspected Ocean Springs and Biloxi, finding two doubtful cases, with 748 total cases since July and 9 deaths, 2 of them yellow fever. Quarantine tightens as Biloxi, Ocean Springs, and Baton Rouge bars remain in effect.
Colonel Brent Arnold received a telegram from J. G. Metcalfe general manager of the L A N Railroad stating New Orleans had raised the quarantine against the area yesterday by order of Superintendent Marshall.
Pass Christian and Ocean Springs report no confirmed yellow fever cases after expert review. Board of Health findings show thirty seven examined cases in Pass Christian ruled not yellow fever, with seven cases at Biloxi, twelve at Barkley, two new at Ocean Springs, and five at Scranton.
Frank Steiner longtime Water Works Trustee and popular citizen hanged himself in his hay loft in Piqua Ohio. The body lay undiscovered for hours after his unusual absence triggered concern. He was active in St Paul German Lutheran Church and belonged to the Odd Fellows Knights of the Golden Eagle and the Red Men. His widow recalls a dream of finding him hanging in the barn before his disappearance.
In the Luetgert wife murder trial Chicago on September 8 the State presented a rusted stained pocket knife alleged to be Luetgert’s and given to Christine Feldt for safekeeping. The knife is claimed to link him to his wife’s death in the sausage maker’s factory and was examined by Luetgert with visible emotion while denying connections.
President McKinley and his brother Abner visited Somerset Pa to watch a Rockwood versus Somerset baseball game. A two hour public reception at the Endsley residence drew about a thousand attendees from the county. The President announced he would remain in Somerset until Monday and declined a Johnstown invitation.
Allen Heim, the roaming maniac, was found in a sewer after a two day hunt by a farmer posse. He carried a sharpened heavy club and wounded several followers before restraint. He was strapped to a cot and returned home amid fear among local women and children. Mrs Charity Cooper, aged ninety five, longtime South Portsmouth resident, died suddenly in Greenup County.
London dispatch reports the death of Sir Everett Millais son of Sir John E Millais. Born May 30 1856 he was the heir to the Millais legacy and a member of the notable family.
A head on collision between the fast eastbound mail train and the westbound Mexico and California express near Emporia Kansas kills twelve to fifteen and injures many more. Bryan is aboard and aids the injured as crews battle fires in wrecked cars.
