Doris Randolph aged 20 and Carl Donner aged 18, both of St. Clairsville Ohio, drowned while bathing. Randolph, unable to swim, grabbed a rope and went into deep water, Donner freed her but disappeared with her, both succumbing to the drowning.

The U S Navy destroyer Noa reported four crewmen killed in an explosion near Shanghai while returning from the Chusan Islands after refloating the Chinese steamer Fei Chung An unconfirmed report said the Noa answered distress signals from the Yoshina Maru before disaster struck The Noa anchored in the Whang Po vicinity and planned to move upriver at daybreak
